Independent Trunk Locking Control

I just discovered the switch that controls whether the trunk unlocks when the rest of the car is unlocked. It is buried in the glove box next to the air fragrance equipment. It is clearly described in the operations guide, but I managed to miss it.

I use this every now and then. Flip the switch, lock the glove compartment with your hard key and only give the valet the key fob. Keeps stuff in the trunk a little more secure.

With this option selected, can the trunk still be opened by putting your foot under the back bumper?

And doesn't the car have a button on the driver's door that opens and closes the boot?
I would have thought to use this instead.

That button has nothing to do with locking the boot. It opens/closes the boot. I'm referring to being able to keep the boot locked even if the car itself is unlocked.

Flipping the switch deactivates ALL methods of opening the trunk... key fob, drivers side switch and kicking under the bumper.... except getting into an accident (which unlocks the trunk as explained in the instruction manual). I didn't try that option!

The switch does not disable the trunk open switch on the inside of the trunk lid.

And how would you get to that switch if the trunk lid was closed and the other external methods were deactivated? Just wondering.

It is a safety switch. I've used it many times (sometimes by accident) when loading materials from the inside of the car with the seats folded down.

So is it the emergency release mandated by the gov't in case someone gets 'trapped' in the trunk? (the one that glows green?) I can't see how the buttons on the edge of the trunk lid can be reached if the lid is down.

Although I've got folding rear seats, I've never lowered them. Can they be lowered from inside the car? If so, releasing the trunk lid via the emergency release would obviously negate the advantage being able to completely secure the trunk from anyone but the honest valets.

The seats must be released from the trunk. I have the seats folded at least twice a week. The last time I accidently opened the trunk from the inside was when I was loading a 20 foot section PVC pipe through the sunroof and into the trunk. That way the excess sticks out over the front of the car.

It is a safety feature designed especially for children who may get closed in the trunk. It is mandatory in the US.
