2018 Software Updates

I had the car's first A service done last month. COMAND and engine/transmission software was updated in addition to the maps. There may have been others, but without looking at the work order ...

Typically, that's when most people get updates. If however, you're having an issue, which an update will cure, you can certainly schedule a service appointment to get a software update before a regular service is needed.

2017 E300 4Matic Q3 Pkg.
I have a 17 E300 4Matic and my dealer told me they don’t update any software unless you report a problem except for map update which I reminded them of. Had problems with headlights not working properly and no cornering lights (euro delivery car) after two attempts cornering lights work and auto high beams but lights do not “curve” when the steering wheel is moved. I know they are not servo controlled. Afraid dealer will muff this up so living with great led’s that just don’t swivel.

So yesterday for the second time in a week, I started my 2019 E450 Cab up in the morning to have COMAND tell me that a system update had completed.
Didn’t really notice anything until I pulled in my garage. Up until today, if I wanted to close my garage door from the car I had to push the garage button BEFORE turning off the car/engine because it cut power to the garage door opener. usually, I just put the car in PARK, and the auto on/off engine feature cuts the engine but the car is still in, enabling the garage opener.
This morning, I accidentally hit the engine off button by mistake — but the garage opener still worked. So I tried it again the next time I went out. Same thing.
But.... I wonder if they only gave it a little more time rather than immediately cutting it off. After the car had been off for a while, and still powered down, I tried to open the garage and no-go.
Anyone else seeing wing this new behavior?

Not sure what version my software is, I got a 2018 E300. As long as I don't open the door, even if I turn off the engine, I can still close the garage door. Usually I close the garage door before I open the door.

I'm glad Tesla is waking up these dinosaur companies such as Mercedes. In today's world there is no excuse for not offering OTA updates like Tesla offers. It's so bad they will not automatically update the software during a routine service visit. You have to force them to do it. From what I understand it can take quite a while to update the software, so the dealers don't want to take up a bay for the update.

Perhaps you need to find a better dealer. On my first service (A) visit all of the software was updated, door hinges replaced, etc. without asking. The problems with OTA updates include security, quality control and update interruption. OTA is significantly slower than wired updates and is prone to errors. IIRC there is a thread here discussing that their OTA navigation update took more than a week. That was in the EU (1.67 million sq. miles) which is significantly smaller than the USA (3.8 million sq. miles).

I'd rather have it done right the first time rather than having to repeat failed update attempts. We have one Tesla in our community and the owner complains frequently about failed software updates. DIY software updates for critical vehicle systems seems to be much like DIY brain surgery. I'll let the professionals do it.

I haven't had to force them to do updates, nor have I found that they only update if you claim to have a problem. But I do have to ask. They don't do it voluntarily or automatically (maps excluded). It does take up shop time that could be used for more profitable repairs and service, On the other hand, the old navigation updates by CD were a time-consuming pain in the ***. I much preferred having the dealer waste his time doing them. So IMO if it isn't absolutely critical I don't mind waiting and having the dealer do my updates.

I just returned from my 10,000 miles service A.
I told the service advisor about the problems with my iPod and command. The technician had the problem happen to him and updated the comand online and A105 Touch Pad.
They also did a map data update for the navigation system.
The 2018 software update bottom line is all my preset radio stations were gone. My bluetooth connection to my iPhone is gone.

You must backup you settings before having a software update. I found out the hard way as well when I lost 7 paired connections all of the entertainment system presets, dozens of navigation destinations, …
There is a menu item to export your stuff. All you do is insert removable media and click the export menu item. There is also an import menu item that will reload whatever was exported. I tested it and it worked smoothly with no problems.

Hey can you tell us what is the new version that you have now? I currently have 2017/2018 V6.0 North American. Its a 2018 E 300 I picked up in September.
So naturally I asked the dealer since its brand new it has all needed updates? Answer was YES. Now we know thats not necessarily the case as they will tell you anything you want to hear to get your $$.

Pre-delivery inspection (PDI) only requires navigation map data to be current, see attachment. COMAND, etc. updates are normally applied only by bulletin recommendation to remedy particular problem(s).
