Mine has started being intermitant

The glide mode and the start stop have started being intermittent lately, as they weather has got colder.

My 2023 CLA 200 used to always go into glide mode when lifting off the accelerator in eco and start/stop at junctions and traffic lights. However, I now notice that I can do my 32 mile journey to work (motorway, A roads and urban) without it coming on now that they weather is colder (4/5 degrees). Then we have a warmer spell (10 degrees) it works all the time. I have had the battery checked at the Mercedes dealer and it is in good condition.

Is this related to outside temperature, oil temperature or something else?

This is completely normal. Same thing happens on my E450 4MATIC that I have had from the beginning. The dynamic setting, outside temperature, are the primary factors I have noticed in affecting the gliding or stop/Go activation. Personally, I turn off the stop and Go off most of the time as it is annoying, also, with the engine going off and on so often, I don't want to take the chance of it breaking down once my warranty is over!

I tried economy mode for a while, and I noticed the glide mode feature. The downside was that, in the rare condition that I wanted to accelerate more quickly, there was a very noticeable delay before the car would downshift and accelerate. I found that annoying, so I stuck with comfort mode.

If I really wanted to reduce fuel costs, I would buy an economy car that doesn't require premium gas.

I have seen that the start/stop feature varies, based on the weather and the condition of the battery. It's kind of an early warning system when the start/stop won't activate anymore. I don't know whether the weather affects glide mode.

FWIW: I drive to Vermont to ski and hopefully the weather is cold! In any event regardless of the temps, all the way down to zero, glide mode works for me.

Auto/start: I like auto start because of two things:
  • Not idling at a stop sign is better for the environment
  • It saves gas. I have yet to meet any rich person who doesn't like to save money. (Most got rich by saving money where they can) (there are numerous threads on pros and cons on auto/start if anyone is interested - just do a search)

However, as the temps go lower, the auto/stop does not engage as often as when the temps are in the 50's and above.

This is my experience: Hope this helps

Depending on the situation, it is probably more efficient to just let go of the throttle and let the rpm stay at the same range, from what I read, it cuts fuel anyways on modern direct injected engines when you let go so it wouldn't be using fuel? Glide on non mild-hybrids have to idle so still using fuel.

It is the opposite for me. It works when it is cooler and the A/C is not running. A/C runs 10 months of the year.

I leave the air con on all year round. Will try it with it switched off.

Drove to work and back for the last two days, 32 miles each way. Turned off the air con, and glide worked every time I lifted off the accelerator in Eco even when it was 5/6 degrees C.

Maybe it's a combination between cold weather and the electrical draw on the car that cuts it off.

Maybe it is a comb
