[SOLVED] Rattle from the engine compartment in low rpm (220d)
I just want to share a fix for a terrible rattle that drove me nuts for more than a year. I drive a 2016 220d that had (hopefuly) a rattle coming from the engine compartment. It was only audible in 1200-1500 rpm especially when it was cold outside . Higher was the load the more it rattled, I always rather downshifted manually while going uphill to rech the rpm in which I could not hear it.
I knew it had to be something that was connected to the engine and after a year or so I finally found it. It was a hose that comes from the engine and presses some cables against the plastic fender. A bit of felt tape fixed it.
Just a sidenote - do not be afraid of fixing the rattles yourself, it only needs felt tape and experimenting. Do not rely on the stealership, they will always tell you they could not reproduce it.

The culprit is the aluminium piping that moves together with the hose that comes from the engine.
We can't be the only ones with this problem so how come that it is a surprise to MB. Took the extra work to pass the dealer an they responded basically “interesting, maybe worth while noting down”

Please could you take more pics (from opening the bonnet all the way to showing us the felt in place). I think this will help lots of people.
thanks
Driving me mad 😊.
My next step might be to investigate the engine compartment but I have plenty of clearance compared to the pictures above.
I'll continue to hunt it down and post if I find a fix. Spent a bit more time on it today and it appears to be coming from a good bit behind the 12.3 inch screen. I've reached in behind when the mesh top was off but couldn't find anything loose.
The Dust filter was loose on one side and vibrating at low revs. The dealer must not have secured since the last service. I still have the tiniest bit of a rattle but I will use felt tape around it as I think the clip itself is slightly damaged.
I've attached the relevant document on how to replace/fasten properly
I had the same problems on 220d 2017.
I had two big rattles, one was in dash board on left side.
Second was from back seats.
Now i have both rattles solved and i have real quite mercedes.
I add photo where was problem.
Good Luck
I was just reminded that this post of yours helped me track down my rattle back in Aug / September. I fixed it and went on my merry way, forgetting to tip my hat and thank you. It wasn't until another owner reached out and I documented my fix that W205C43PFL saw it and reached out. He found your thread here that I had lost.
Thank you very much for pointing me in the right direction.
