[SOLVED] Rattle from the engine compartment in low rpm (220d)
Hi,
I just want to share a fix for a terrible rattle that drove me nuts for more than a year. I drive a 2016 220d that had (hopefuly) a rattle coming from the engine compartment. It was only audible in 1200-1500 rpm especially when it was cold outside . Higher was the load the more it rattled, I always rather downshifted manually while going uphill to rech the rpm in which I could not hear it.
I knew it had to be something that was connected to the engine and after a year or so I finally found it. It was a hose that comes from the engine and presses some cables against the plastic fender. A bit of felt tape fixed it.
Just a sidenote - do not be afraid of fixing the rattles yourself, it only needs felt tape and experimenting. Do not rely on the stealership, they will always tell you they could not reproduce it.

The culprit is the aluminium piping that moves together with the hose that comes from the engine.

Less subtle than that after 2 years with this annoying rattle. The dealer made the fix for rattle in dashboard and after that they could not hear anything strange. Suddenly realising this was vibrating pipes during driving, stopped and ripped up the cover on the side in engine copartment and pulled the pipes a couple of millimeters out of their position. Back with the cover and back in the car. No rattle!
We can't be the only ones with this problem so how come that it is a surprise to MB. Took the extra work to pass the dealer an they responded basically “interesting, maybe worth while noting down”

Which exaxt hose you are refering to? Check the clearance between the fender and the cable (or that metal holder attached to the piping. If there us no sufficient clearance aplly felt tape.

I don't know where that rattle is coming from but I noticed you have engine temperature displayed on your screen in Progressive mode. Mine doesn't have this and I wish it did. I wonder why the difference... maybe it's a petrol/diesel thing...?

More pictures please
Hello, I too have this exact problem you have described and it’s driving me nuts but can’t quite tell from your pics exactly where this is either.
Please could you take more pics (from opening the bonnet all the way to showing us the felt in place). I think this will help lots of people.
thanks

Hi, I have exactly the same rattle on my 2018 E220d when accelerating between 1250 and 1500rpm. I thought it was coming from behind the dash but I guess it could be coming from the engine compartment and I have been searching the forums for a solution as the dealer has not been able to fix. Where exactly did you apply the felt tape to fix the problem? I don’t quite understand from your photo exactly which hose is the problem. Thanks for your help on this as the rattle is driving me mad!
Driving me mad 😊.
My next step might be to investigate the engine compartment but I have plenty of clearance compared to the pictures above.

Unfortunately not. It has been back to the dealer 3 times now for a total of 5 days. They have had the dash apart and a lot of the engine compartment as well and have told me that they cannot find or fix the problem. It has got worse and worse to the point where i could not live with it so changed the car to a GLC instead.

I'll continue to hunt it down and post if I find a fix. Spent a bit more time on it today and it appears to be coming from a good bit behind the 12.3 inch screen. I've reached in behind when the mesh top was off but couldn't find anything loose.

Thanks. Let me know if you solve the problem. Some have reported a loose hose behind the dash although the dealer told me that they have checked that and they thought that it could possibly be coming from the engine compartment. The new GLC is nice and quiet so fingers crossed! It is the facelift model with the same 4 cylinder 1950cc engine as the E class 220d but tuned to 245bhp; it’s badged 300d so has a bit more power than my E. Good luck!

Fixed it!
The Dust filter was loose on one side and vibrating at low revs. The dealer must not have secured since the last service. I still have the tiniest bit of a rattle but I will use felt tape around it as I think the clip itself is slightly damaged.
I've attached the relevant document on how to replace/fasten properly
