18" Standard wheels vs. 18" AMG wheels - same tire = same comfort?

Hello guys,

I'm a total Mercedes newbie, trying to buy first one and looking at the E-class 450 4MATIC.

I really want a comfortable ride, and heard from one of the dealers that the AMG wheels are rougher. But since I really want the "AMG Line Exterior w/ Night Package" option, it looks like I'm forced to get AMG wheels with that package.

Does anyone know if the 18" AMG wheels will be a rougher ride than the standard "18" twin 5-spoke" wheels? Isn't it really just up to the tires you get? t looks like you can get the R02 "All season tires" (default on Standard) or the R66 "MOE Extended Mobility tires." (default on AMG) with either wheel, so does the comfort just really come down to the tire? And if so, are the extended mobility tires less comfortable?

I'm also curious if anyone has experience with the Air Body Control package and if that helps with ride comfort when going over potholes. And does anyone know how this option interplays with the "Comfort suspension" (luxury package) or "Lowered suspension" options?

Thanks, I really appreciate any insight from current car owners!

The difference is not much related to the wheel size (if you stay with 18" wheel) but rather the suspension you get when you order the AMG Line Exterior option or you jump to 19" or 20" wheel/tire sizes. Here you will get a slightly different stiffer suspension setting - meaning - a bit of a harsher ride. You also can select your specific settings among: Sport+, Sport, Economy etc.. I ride the vehicle with Sport+ setting. Finally, the tire manufacturer and air pressure may play a role in the whole issue of ride quality. All my MB's have had the sport package including by 2019 CLS with 20" AMG wheel (Goodyear - Run Flat tires) type suspension. With regards, to the Air Body Control, you need to test the vehicles with and without. I have had it in previous MB's and is nice if the vehicle has it already. I do not have it in my CLS and and I am very happy with the "steel" standard suspension. Bottom line: You need to road test the vehicle that you really want vs. what the dealer recommends. You will be driving the new vehicle for a long time and you, not the dealership needs to be satisfied with your lease or purchase!!

Thanks for the response, but I don't see anywhere in the 2019 E class order guide that says buying the AMG Line Exterior stiffens the suspension (assuming you keep the 18" wheels and use the standard all-season tires). Order guide for reference is here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1LMN...NlX2eo0_Q/view

Look carefully at option code 322: Pick 19" wheel package your ride will be a bit harsher vs. 18" wheel!!! But again, you choose your ride...

Same wheel diameter and same tire size, including aspect ratio = same or undetectably changed ride, all other things remaining equal.

That's a 19 versus an 18 inch wheel. We're talking 18 inch AMG versus standard wheels. Unless they are poorly made wheels, the wheels shouldn't affect ride comfort at all. Still hacked off that you can't choose your wheel choice, unless you bind yourself to certain packages.

Amg line 450 is modestly lowered compared to standard 450. Can't say if it's a substantial difference, but there it is.

I have the amg night line 450 with 18 inch wheels and find the ride sublime and taut in corner. Alchemy, I say.

Cool, thanks for the reply. Do you have Air Body Control by chance or standard suspension?

Wagon so air leveling in the rear. But ABC is not worth it to me, despite many views to the contrary on this forum
