A first world problem..........

...... windshield wipers shudder and are noisy when they make the change of direction at the end of their stroke.

Using windshield washer fluid helps temporarily but they are soon back to their noisy selves

Any thoughts or solutions to my seriously first world problem ;-)?

Yes there is a fix. Go to the dealer and get new wipers free of charge. I got 2 pairs on the 2 W213’s.

I've used Liqui Moly rain repellent on my cars for the past 6 years and suggest you try it. Believe it or not, I've only used my wind screen wipers a handful of times in those 6 years and I live in a tropical country which rains for weeks on end. The repellent is so effective especially if you are travelling above 50km/h, the rain will just fly off your windscreen leaving no reason to use the wipers. In addition to repelling the rain, they also have a lubricating effect on the wipers so the wipers run much more smoothly even if the wipers are aged. I apply the repellent on all windows and wing mirrors which makes the visibility so much better in the midst of rain storms.

Below is the link. Other companies offer similar products like Rain-X but I've found Liqui Moly the longest lasting and cleanest on application ( Rain-X can fog the windscreen requiring buffing with a micro-fibre - not a big deal but a con nonetheless )
https://www.sgcarmart.com/products/overview.php?ID=5765

One application will last 2 to 6 weeks, depending on amount of rain exposure and dust. One bottle lasts me about 3 months but I like to apply a lot.

On my new W213, I have yet to use the wipers so far during 8 months of ownership.

A nice coat of paste wax on the windshield will also negate the shudder of the wipers. I never use mine as the paste wax repels the water pretty well.

Wash your windshield good. I had chattering wiper blades in a brand new F-150 pickup and the mechanic wahsed the windshield. I don't know what fluid was used but it worked. I like ammonia and water.

Owners manual states that nothing like Rain-X or wax be applied to the windshield.

I just did a search and found that there has been a class action law suit against Rain-X claiming that it damages fluid level sensors and I just put Rain-X in my SL The suit was dismissed but I don't know if it was proven to be true or not.

It makes noises because it's dirty. You can use denatured alcohol diluted with water, this will strip away any grease, grime, wax etc from the glass (and the paint if you overspray), if you want a safer option use some no-ammonia glass cleaner, do several passes. You also have to clean the wiper blades, you can use the same glass cleaner or a mild degreaser, even a bit of dish soap.

I dont use rainx, I want to use the rain sensing wipers that I paid for.

I use isopropyl alcohol to clean the wiper blades and do not touch with your fingers after cleaning them, finger oil eats the rubber.

Thanks for the part about the finger oil. My MB is not garaged, and I frequently have to remove tree bits stuck under the wipers. I'll use a rag from now on. I have used Rain-X on previous, non-Mercedes cars and on the visor of my motorcycle helmet.. It was effective, but it took a lot of work to buff it clear.

To add to this on both of my E300’s The wipers were chattering and noisy Directly from the factory. Both cars under 1000 miles had very loud wipers, And they would scatter or jump across the windshield. As if they had 50,000 miles of use. The dealer replaced both sets at no charge and no questions asked on separate occasions. The 1 other E300 it came back on the first rainfall and the dealer did say they cleaned off the windshield using special cleaners at first, and they claimed that was the problem. Dirty/contaminated windshield. Whatever it is they used I have no idea. But it didnt work. Now 3rd set of wipers on the same windshield with NO cleaning from the dealership because they just swapped it outside the service bay with me right there. And we poured water worked 100%. Also rainfall it was normal. So these wipers while brand new and costly are complete pos, and or a very large batch was defective for some reason.
Anyone having this problem I would strongly advise to contact your dealer and MB, after you’ve cleaned your windshield and issue is still there it’s obvious its not the windshield but the defective wipers.

Some years ago, I wanted to replace wipers on a Toyota Avalon. It had been a while, and they didn't clear as well as I thought they should (but they ran smoothly). At Sam's Club, I saw these relatively expensive wipers for sale, special super-duper wipers, for like $30 each. I bought them, and after installation, those things hopped across my windshield like an Olympic hop, skip and jump! Cleaned the windshield with everything I could think of: no change. Took them back, and bought $5 Trico wipers from Walmart. Worked like a charm, and lasted well.

Sometimes higher quality, just isn't.

Not sure if you are replying to me, but I knew that. That's why I haven't used it in Mercedes cars. i do use Rain-X fluid and MB wipers. No problems after 4 1/2 years.

Hi

I hear many people referring to rain x. But I don’t use rain x and have been back to the dealer on so many occasions. They cant fix this damn issue and it is so frustrating for an expensive car.

I have a 2017 E300 and I have been told this is normal wiper movement - it is not.

Is this a big issue and what numbers do you know are affected. Maybe the only thing that will work is taking a class action against Mercedes.

Has the dealer preformed any fixes that truly worked?

Clean the glass. First clean the glass with window cleaner then clay bar the glass. Then use the window cleaner again. You won’t believe how much it helps.

I clean the wiper blades with a microfiber cloth when I wash the car and keep the glass very clean. I've never had an issue with wipers. Do not let rain water dry on the glass because it contains impurities that will adhere. A quick cycle with washer solution is enough to avoid the problem.

As I've said before, upon picking up my new 2020 E450 wagon from the dealership and driving it an hour home, a light rain occurred, and my wipers hopped across my new windshield. Of course they'd just cleaned the car, had it inside presented with a bow (just after Christmas), etc. I think it's design, or the wiper material.

The car most likely was outside in the weather for some time prior to being prepped for delivery. IMO dealer cleaning standards are cursory and not up to individual standards.

It was just received by them two days before, for my order.
