We had the same experience today. Two fuel lines being replaced and car will be back to us tomorrow, so I hope the gas smell goes away.

I would think those lines would be under the rear seat and remove the access panel that covers the fuel pump? Is this correct? I have a S class and it does this same thing. I may only have to have the passenger side of the rear seat cushion pulled up as I have rear bucket seats with the rear seat package and built in center console. I have the exact same symptoms as was outlined in the above post, it's been driving me nuts trying to figure out what the issue was. i've had it to the dealer 3 times now and they found nothing like usual. It is mainly first thing in the morning that I notice it after I open the drivers door. Maybe the fuel pump is activated when the door is opened as I do hear some sort of pump come on towards the backside of the car and then I get the strong gasoline smell.

I can’t believe how casual this seems to you folks. A gas smell is dangerous. You all sound like it’s a minor inconvenience. It’s dangerous.

It's not like the underside of the car is coated with gasoline or anything, it is bone dry under the car leaves no drops or anything like that. It must just be a slight seepage. I've complained about mine 3 times now to dealer and each time they cant find anything they say so what can one do? I do plan on trying another dealer the next time the car is serviced and mentioning it again. I do not believe it is a fire hazard, just an annoyance.

I got this kind of problem before. This is how the dealer fix the problem on 13Jun19. No more gas smell since.

2017 E300 High Pressure Fuel Pump Leak

The second stage high pressure fuel pump that is located inside the engine compartment on top of the engine and towards the firewall is leaking gas from the seals causing a distinct smell of fuel in the car and creating a fire hazard. I cannot believe this!!!! TOTALY UNACCEPTABLE.

Re: 2017 E300 MB

I have the same issue. No one seems to know why it smells like a strong gasoline. It’s only when my
vehicle sits in the garage for a long period of time. I have a washer/dryer that’s right next to my car and every time I do laundry, I smell it! I’ve taken it to 2 mechanics and they’ve told me they don’t see any leaks, but I smell the strong smell of gas! Had anyone had any luck on finding out what the problem is???
I will NEVER own another Mercedes Benz again… EVER!
I bought it brand new, and I am just disgusted that it has such a dangerous issue and it’s only 5 years old!

when you fill your gas, do you like to top off after the pump has stop?

I had the same gas smell, specifically on startup and worse on cold days. I had it checked at MB Augusta, GA the day after Christmas since we were out of town for a visit with family.
They verified that it was 3 fuel lines leaking in the engine compartment, two of which were covered under an extended warranty from MB. The only one I had to pay for was the cheapest fix. No fuel smell at all after that.

Gas smell

1)I just wanna ask does anyone associate the “gas” with like WD-40 type smell ? Just wanna be sure I’m smelling the same thing or I’m just smelling gas. Overall I’m having the same symptoms as everyone else.

2) has anyone been able to get an estimate on the fix outside of warranty please? Thanks in advance

I really think it has a lot to do with the type of clamps they use from the factory. Put a new clamp on my low pressure fuel line and the issue was solved. It was under the hood on the right side over the right passenger valve cover. This was on a S560 2018.

Thanks for that. I’m having the same issues as everyone else 😆
1- go to shop to complain about a gas smell
2- they reply there’s no smell (it’s gone by the time I’m there)
3- they check all the fuel lines and 100% assure me there fine and to come back if it continues
I didn’t want to insult my mechanics intelligence so I’ll go back in a few days. But the clamps you mentioned that’s the first time I hear about it and could be a simple fix will update once it’s resolved 🙏🏻

All it takes is a tiny bit of seepage where the metal meets the rubber fuel line to give of a strong odor at certain times. Take a finger and go around each joined fuel line area and see if you come up with any gasoline smell on your finger. Seems like especially the low pressure fuel lines are having issues where the rubber line meets the metal line not real crazy about the design of these factory clamps I don’t think they clamp off the rubber line tight enough.
