2017 E300 4MATIC GAS/FUMES SMELL

Every time I get in the car I smell gas. Sometimes after I open the front door and before I start the car. I purchased the car recently and it's still under warranty. The dealer tells me they don't smell anything. I have had other people in the car who also could smell the gas. Is there anyone who has had a similar experience?

Could be a fuel line leak, it’s happened to other members on here, not me. I think there’s service bulletin for it as well?

Agree, have dealer revisit. If you want pull rear seat and remove cover to check for fuel leakage, see attachment.

I have had the same issue. My local dealer smelled the fuel scent and replaced the fuel pump as a result. However; the fuel smell still exists and I have to go back to the dealer on this. The fuel scent, in my particular situation, is strongest in the morning or if the car has been sitting for a while. It is slight or less prevalent when the car has been turned on/off recently. I’ll keep everyone posted.

Looks like we have the same exact issue. I am going back to the dealer next week. We'll see what happens.

my doors weather trim molding was giving off a stong rubber smell when i first bought my car. it was so bad i was airing out the car in the winter! I knew it would eventually go away because it off-gasses for a period of time. and it gradually went away. ive had my car almost 2 years and its nearly gone. made me wonder what the heck we are breathing in these days.....that crap cant be good.

not sure about your gas smell though.

yes, I had this problem and had it remedied. I found out that it only happened after the car was sitting for a while, like overnight. By the time I drove it to the dealer, they obviously count smell it. So they suggested I keep it there for a few hours. Lo and behold, I returned in the afternoon and then drove it around the block a few times. The smell came back from the air vents. They ended up diagnosing it as a low pressure fuel line leak.

Have your dealer replace the two flexible fuel lines from the fuel feed line to the high pressure fuel pump. There is no official bulletin on this but this is the fix.

I have the same issue. the fuel leak odor comes out of the engine compartment from the area around the turbo charger. Sounds like a recall problem and I didn't find any recall or service prompt. (2017 E300; 4-cyl 2.0 - 60k miles)

Hi buddy, I just bought the same year w213 and had the exactly same gas smell, even just after I open the front door and before I start the car like u described. It comes out from the driver side front wheel. Did you find any solutions for it?

Hi, no luck yet. It is very sporadic. Mainly when the car is first driven in the morning and parked +/- 10 minutes later. After that it doesn't come up anymore. If I found out I will keep you posted.

I have a 2017 E300 4Matic with the sport package. I just broke 30,000 miles and still have the same issue. Been back to the dealer as recently as last month to discuss it. No service bulletin still. Service advisor says that he has heard it from a number of people, but no one is aware of a fix. They went over the car again to make sure there were no leaks or anything....still nothing.

If you hear of anything please post and I will as well. Thanks.

Hi buddy, just solved the same issue on my car at dealer. As @Petmerctech suggested, quote from my invoice: Confirmed fuel leak was coming from line to high pressure pump. Removed lower panel of transmission to gain access to lines. Removed high pressure fuel pump covers, removed and installed fuel lines, and installed in reverse order to correct. Ran engine to verify no large fuel leaks. found good at this time.

Show this to ur dealer. Good luck!

Check my reply to other guys. I solved the issue at dealer. My dealer said it was kind of common on C class but rarely found on E class

When I had this done, my car was under warranty -- so it was done as a warranty item. To my knowledge, there is no known open recall that would make this a covered repair on an out of warranty car. However, if you have a good relationship with your dealer service advisor, maybe they can help. Regardless, I would check with your dealer to see. If you are in the Southern California area, I highly recommend Fletcher Jones Motor Cars Service Department in Newport Beach, they are by far the best that I have dealt with to date.

Update!

The universe has been great to me recently and I am appreciative! I got the car from carmax and the warranty for mb and carmax expired a couple months after. Fortunately i got a copy of the internal report before i bought car and this was listed as an issue (the smell). I had a very kind service guy at carmax here in illinois and he did the right thing with his manager and they are repairing it with no cost to me! I was sweating but fortunately i will get my baby back in healthy shape! Thanks for the info you guys posted here. I showed them this post and they said they would diagnose, and it was the exact thing listed here, high pressure fuel pump.
