E450 Wagon Right Rear Suspension Rattle

Hey all - want to check and see if anyone has experienced a persistent rattle in the right rear of the car. I have a rattle that occurs on smaller, high frequency bumps - larger bumps do not cause it. I have eliminated anything in the cargo area as a cause - so, I am assuming that it is suspension-related. I have an appointment with the dealer on Weds - just wanted to see if anyone had experienced this before, so I can hopefully point them in the right direction. Car has all of 1,400 miles on it - so hoping this is an easy fix.

Yes, I have the same thing. I don't notice it all here in Florida but up north with the more bumpy roads I do. I recently had the car service but forgot to mention this to the dealer because here in Florida I'm not even noticing it and they probably would not either.

i had something very similar shortly after i got the car. I had the car at the dealership on at least 3 occasions because the noise was getting to me and the car had only 2000 to 3000 kms. The dealer eventually found the cause. It was a bolt that was not completely tightened at the factory in the left side at the rear. The tec drove the car with another tec riding in the back to listen for it . They tightened the bolt and the problem was solved..I just found the work order and the car had 4800kms and the work order stated "found that the harness bracket had a 3rd bolt that was behind a metal panel.removed panel and tightened 3rd bolt.Test drove.Noise gone"
hope this info might help...i must say for a new car the noise was very aggravating and I am very pleased that the dealer finally fixed it

Martin, I am heading down the same road. They said they found a loose bolt and tightened it - but same rattle there as I pulled out of the driveway of the dealership. Will go back in a few weeks and take a ride with the service writer.

Interesting, sounds like a lot of Wagons have this. I kept thinking I must have left something in the cargo area that was rattling around, thats what it sounds like but nope there was nothing there on many occasions I heard it up north, cant duplicate it here in Florida though unless I search around for a more remote bumpy road which is possible if I look hard enough

2012, funny thing, the noise only occurs on small bumps that are closely spaced together. So - it's not easy to reproduce. Unfortunately, on my street and in the garage at work, I can re-create it at will. So - I think the dealer actually tried, I think it takes very specific conditions to make it happen - and I encounter those conditions multiple times a day.

So - after another trip to the dealer, they replaced the right rear shock and it appears to have eliminated the rattle... Hoping that's the end of it. Dealer was patient and took my concern seriously, which I appreciate.

I have had this issue for a year and finally solved it. In my case, it wasn't the suspension; it was the trunk interior cover that is installed just behind the rear seat headrests. The release button on the left side rattles over bumps now and again, especially if it is fully installed. It almost feels loose.

What got me to notice it is that while I was taking the service manager for a drive to identify it, I couldn't and naturally was frustrated. Age I spotted him of and drove home sheepishly, I heard it again. Later that week, I had the rear seats filled down and the interior trunk cover removed because of a large load. Again, no noise. That for me investigating. Once I reinstalled out felt around the button, I heard that rattle immediately. The solution was some felt under the latch. THANKFULLY!

FYI, the reason it didn't make a sound with the service manager was because he was sitting behind me to be close to the "suspension" (my original hypothesis). Turns out his weight was pushing up against the cover bar and stopped the rattle. Unreal.

Just for the record, my 2019 E450 Estate had a right rear rattle, which turned out to be the shocks.

Mine was never found, I traded the car. I feel sorry for the next owner, because it was really annoying. Glad you guys were able to solve the issue - some days I miss my wagon.
