Poor quality cell phone call-out issue

I have a new E Class. Verizon iPhone XI The quality of the cell phone reception from my speakers is great. The quality of the sound transmission the listener hears of my voice is clipped, poor quality and sounds muffled. When I switch to mic on phone itself - and bypass car Bluetooth it is fine. I tried a Bluetooth head set in car. Phone works through Bluetooth headset in my car. Phone works fine with a new Volvo.. Dealer has replaced the in car mics in Mercedes. No improvement. . have disconnected phone and reconnect dozens of times . no improvement. Have set vol on max in car and on phone. no improvement. My wife's iPhone IX is identical to mine but ATT carrier -- still same problem. Dealer has no other options they can think of and understands the problem. We Live in Nashville with great signal strength. What else can this be? .

This place is a joke.
Remove the plastic microphone covers from the headliner. Look inside the cover, pull out the rubber block then remove and discard the small paper-like filter. Re-install the rubber block.

Did you ever figure out the issue? From day 1 with my 2020 E350, the outgoing microphone quality has been terrible. I had an E43 before this model and for the last year of the lease, I had the same issue. I'm wondering if it happened when i bought a new iphone or updated my iphone back with the E43.

Let me know if you get this because i'm tired of using speakerphone for calls in my luxury car with state of the art engineering

2020 E450 Coupe 4-Matic
Hey NashvilleCat. I also have this exact problem on my 2020 E450 Coupe. Coincidentally, I'm also in Nashville, Brentwood to be exact. I only took delivery of this vehicle on Sunday and only discovered this issue yesterday. Was going to troubleshoot this issue myself today but it seems that may be fruitless as you appear to have done everything I was considering.
Did you ever get a resolution? As per other thread, replace the Command module/radio at Mercedes of Music City?

Answer. I resolved after multiple trips. Each mike has a plastic seal internally to keep dust out during transport. They need to remove covers and pull off the seals. You can’t do this yourself. That is solution. Enjoy car.

Seems replacing the entire system is a very expensive solution… (car purchased used and not under warranty).

What is the trick to remove the mic cover to check for the dust seal??

Pretty sure that's what I told you to do, after which you said was already done.

I removed the mic and removed the paper cover which was inside but it did not improve the quality at all. BTW, this is something that can be done by the owner... but is a bit tricky. I had to pop the vanity light open so I Could reach in and hold the mic down while I replaced the cover...

My passenger side works fine. Also voice control seems to work fine. Even speaking very softy into the driver side microphone it can recognize my commands easily. My next step is to order a new microphone.

Does anyone know if the Bluetooth microphone is also used for voice commands? or are they two systems? (could be why the voice command works while the bluetooth reception does not)

thank you,

Poor Call Quality 2019 A220

I have been having the same issue for the last couple of years. People on the other end of the call say I sounded far from the phone. I just found out you can adjust the transmission and reception volumes to increase the sensitivity of the mic and improve the call quality. In the 2019 A220 car you can go to the phone selection and then select the name of the phone. Under this menu you select settings and then volume. Here you can increase and decrease the reception and transmission volumes. I increased both to max (+2) and that seemed to fix the issue in both the native phone app and CarPlay. I am assuming other car models have a similar menu. Hope that helps. Below is an image from the manual of the a220.

Thank you. Yes, E-Class has this also, but just amplifies the volume. In my case the microphone doesn't work with Bluetooth (the passenger side works, so the other end can kind of hear me, but sounds far away.... ) However it isn't the microphone itself as it works fine for voice commands. I just need to get it in to the dealer to see if it is the software issue.
