Extended Warranty, Yes or No?

I purchased my 2017 E300 in July 2016. It has been driven less than 23,000 miles and I am planning to keep it until the next major body style change. The warranty expires in about 6 weeks.

I have not spoken to my dealer yet about extending the warranty and have no idea of what it will cost, but know it is not inexpensive,

Any thoughts or recommendations? Any idea of cost for a 3-year extension for less than 75,000 miles?

I wasted a lot of money on an ELW for my 63 several years ago......didn't use it once. Just my experience.

Is it necessary? Have you had problems? Only 23K means it's not dtiven all that much.
Also, ask your dealer about transferring an unused extended warranty to your new purchase.

Only once did I wish I had an extended warranty. That was for a failed air suspension system on a 5 year old W211. Other than that I've spent far less on out of warranty repairs than the cost of an extended warranty. I typically keep my cars at least 6 years and often longer. That being said, it only takes one major repair such as a transmission to offset the EW cost. You are really paying for peace of mind. YMMV

You can check the extended warranty subforum for the best price. A few names keep coming up all the time, just email 2-3 of them and see what quote you get. Most of them can beat the local dealer quite easily. As for whether you should get it, depends how much you value peace of mind. I'd be 50/50 about getting it, on the one hand it's a new body style and the first year ones always had more problems than the later years and yours is an early model. On the other hand they've been more reliable of late. A toss up, your choice. I think if you don't have any claims, you can get some of it back.

@bmeck2003 An extended warranty is not a good financial investment, this is discussed ad nauseum on this site. It does, however, offer some people peace of mind.

I have been a member of MBWorld for about 7 years and never realized that there was a separate forum for Extended Warranty. Of course, I never was interested in an extended warranty before now.

Thanks to cetialpha5 who mentioned that forum in his/her reply, I will post this question over there.

Extended warranties are a waste of money, unless your cashflow is high and savings low, but that is something buying a used Mercedes won't cure in the first place. I mean, Hondas and Toyotas are seriously reliable and much less expensive. As an example I drove a 1994 Subaru Impreza 14 years and 230,000 miles, gave it to a friend who's brother-in-law still drives it after a used engine swap. Cost me fourteen cents per mile less insurance and fuel.

The warranty business is highly profitable. The dealer sells it to you for $3000 or what ever and the underlying insurance is say $1500. This is how all the super dealer consolidation got started in the 1980's. They cut prices and the F&I people then proceeded to lift your wallet right out of your pocket.....

The best plan is to have a spare amount in the bank for emergencies, and why not start with that $3000 you did not spend? Chances are you will get to keep it, too!

Very well put Sir! I hate to admit it......BUT I spent over 8K for an ELW through MB..........I was so mad at myself for doing it too because as you said.........I should have put it by or in a bank........thought I was doing something responsible for my car........but being young and dumb does not help, glad I'm so much smarter now LOL! I joke
