2019 e450 estate

Just picked up this 2019 e450 estate with just 290 miles on it. Drove it home from Alabama. Drives really nice and can almost drive itself. Spent a day washing, clay baring,
and waxing.

E450 Wagon
I just bought the same car, in white with nut brown leather. It's a terrific highway cruiser. I drove from Sarasota to DC and back to pick up my girlfriend. So quiet and smooth and I managed range of 550 miles per tank. I'm driving to New England for the summer and can't wait to hit the road. Pure pleasure. If only it had room for a spare tire!

Just drove mine from Charlotte, NC to Upstate NY and back - awesome highway cruiser. Congrats on the new wagon, Gene.

Does anyone else around here ever wonder why a car (i.e. the wagon) that sells in such low numbers get so much attention.

It’s funny you mention that. A few years ago I had a e63 AMG Renntech wagon. We took it to Hilton Head for the Club Car Showcase and it received the William Hilton Award.
The William Hilton Award is for the car that you would most like to drive. It was a fun car to drive with over 700 hp and Over 800lbs tq.

The fact that the current W213 wagon is so strikingly beautiful and well proportioned has a lot to do with it. I believe the reason so few are sold, is because most folks looking for utility go with an SUV and many still think of a wagon as something a mom with a bunch of kids might drive.

Agree, Streamliner, also, they command a premium over most SUVs - you have to really want a wagon to spend the time looking for the right one (they aren't abundant, as we all know) and then work hard to whittle down the premium to an acceptable point.

So do you think that will show up in the resale values. I had occasion to check the prices on V70R’s and they are sky high. Astronomical.]

And now, for 2021, the beautiful, stately, E450 wagon is GONE! In its place, we get the truly HOMELY “All Terrain.” I really feel this is a huge mistake, but I like beautiful vehicles and the E450 Wagons to me, are just gorgeous!

While I was never in the market for a wagon/Estate car, I always thought it was cool that M-B offered one in the sea of SUV/CUVs. The GLC/GLE/GLS far outsell the E wagon.

This.

It's a shame, and puzzling to say the least given how people actually use their SUVs. But it is what it is: people dramatically prefer the concept of an SUV over a wagon, and definitely over sedans. However, I still can't understand why given the weaker performance, handling and mileage. Talk about irony.

There is one glaring difference between a wagon and an SUV, namely the ability to carry tall items. I've never bought a wagon because of this limitation. IMO a wagon is designed to carry people and small cargo items.

That's mostly an illusion. SUV roof is higher but they also have higher load floor. The cargo floor to roof height measurements are not that different in a wagon vs. SUV. For exmpale, the current GLE and E class have basically the same cargo height so they can both carry roughly the same tall items. If it will fit in GLE, it will most likely fit in the E-class. But the E-class cargo area is deeper and more useful for longer items. The cargo volume favors the wagon significantly by a large margin. If you have a large boxes or odd shape items like furniture, wagon is much better than SUV.

When we had our 2012 e63 wagon my son needed to move a big mirror. It wouldn’t fit in any of the family or friends SUVs but it did fit in the wagon.
Something that most of you don’t know but we traded a Bentley Flying Spur in on the wagon. They gave us a great deal the wagon plus $$$$.
My wife and I both think that the wagon rides every bit as nice as the Bentley.

The 63 mm opening height SUV advantage makes a BIG difference in loading tall items. Even my E300 sedan is great for carrying long flat items such as ladders or art work.

The SUV preference is all about ride height and the increased visibility it provides. I understand why that's desirable even though that same ride height has a negative effect on driving dynamics and road feel. For folks who aren't driving enthusiasts today's crop of SUV's are very, very good but for me I would rather be in the wagon. It looks better and it feels better to drive while carrying just as much or more as a comparably sized SUV. And while I am glad the E450 and E63 S exist I am sad that the E450 is becoming slightly more SUV like with it's next iteration.

I would never buy a wagon because they really are mommy mobiles. They are ugly. They are a compromise that does not handle as well as a sedan or a SUV. They don't have the ground clearance to drive on the flat Florida beaches. (They sink 'til the fenders are in the sand.) They must stay on pavement. They do not have the carrying capacity of a SUV. They do not have the trailer pulling capacity of a SUV.

I’m all for people indulging their own preferences and choosing whatever vehicle best suits their taste and needs whether that is an SUV, wagon, or sedan. However I think that claiming that wagons don’t handle as well (at least on pavement) as SUVs is objectively false.

Well, hey man, don't sugar coat it, tell us how you really feel!

As recent owner of a new-to-me 2019 E450 wagon, I could not disagree more. This wagon rides SOOOO smoothly, handles so nicely, is so quiet and comfortable, that about the only car I have ever had that outshines it in these areas is my S560. I bought this wagon because I happen to think they are beautiful, elegant and sort of have that "old estate wagon" type look to them. My car with 18" wheels, Air Body Control, Acoustic Comfort Pkg. and just mounted non-run flat tires is an absolute dream to drive and I find it incomparable to most any SUV. SUV's are great for what they do. Comparing any SUV to a W216 T-model is like comparing apples to oranges, IMHO.

Then why post that the wagon has more storage, etc. and is superior to a SUV? None of my friends buy a SUV to be a boulevard queen. They are working vehicles. They buy them to pull trailers that wagons in the US cannot do as delivered by MB. They buy them to drive on the beach or on unpaved paths. A MB wagon is strictly a boulevard queen that has 3rd row seating for small children and very low ground clearance. (Read the threads about the wagon suspension bottoming out on paved city streets.)

Well, I wasn't the one who talked about the storage space, but that's OK. Of course the wagon is not an off road vehicle. Did anyone suggest that it was? A "boulevard queen?" I don't have a problem with that term at all. Anyway, the T-Model is a great vehicle and I don't think anyone who buys one expects to be trying to tow anything or go off roading, we just love them for what they are and don't lament what they are not.
