Also notice that the article stated that all cars in China are vulnerable to the same attack, not just Mercedes. Successful attacks are not new, only the techniques used. Many years ago there was a demonstration of a successful attack on a car (IIRC Chrysler) being driven on a highway. The attacker was able to disable the brakes and increase the throttle on the target car from a following car. There are several academic white papers that have been published describing attack scenarios on vehicles, cell phones, ...

Basically this is just breaking into the Mercedes Me functionalities. Technically, if you dont subscribe to these, it would not work for the hackers. At least they wouldn't be able to steal your car, just the possessions inside of it. Also no mention of being able to take over the vehicles operations, which is much more scary

MB has a habit of not notifying customers of issues. They most often address them when the vehicle goes in for service. Even though the issues here were resolved, I still thought it was a good idea to share it with others.

Fortunately MB and other manufacturers buy off the shelf vehicle operating systems such as QNX, Linux, ... These systems are constantly evolving as new vulnerabilities are uncovered. Here is a link to a brief overview of such systems.

W213 network is made up of many computers (aka controllers) interconnected by the car area network (CAN). Penetrating one such as the entertainment system head unit opens the possibility of penetrating others.

I personally don't know that much about computers........it's so cool to me that there are folks that know how to. I recently read about the kid that hacked Instagram? or whatever it was; during his ZOOM meeting some hackers **** bombed it LMFAO!! Like they didn't see THAT coming! LOLOL!
