2019 E450 Defective??

I recently purchased a certified pre-owned 2019 E450 for $70k and it has been in Mercedes service 5 times due to a loud popping sound when I go in reverse. Sometimes it even hesitates to back up. Service dept finally said it’s a known “character flaw” for 2016-2019 E class w/ no fix. So, then it’s defective? I haven’t seen a class-action suit or recall. So I reached out to VP of customer Serv of Mercedes & they said they stand by what service dept says. Is this a joke?? I worked hard to get my dream car & to be treated like this is not acceptable. Stand by your motto “the best or nothing’! Has anyone else had this issue??

Not normal, check with another dealer. I don't see how any dealer could listen to that sound and say it's normal. My 2019 does not make that sound.

don't have this either.

though same experience with customer service.
basically if the dealer can't fix a problem, you are screwed and nobody from customer service can/will help you.

the phrase should be ""the best or nothing...., or learn to live with it""

I have a 2019E450. Never heard that sound - not even once.

I would not accept the dealer's answer - that is complete BS! I would also put in writing to the VP of service you spoke to that the situation is unacceptable and continue to follow up with Mercedes headquarters.

Out of curiosity, what was the original MSRP on your car? You mentioned that you paid $70K. Mine had a MSRP of $72,000, a special order, and I paid $64,000, about 12% off of MSRP. I got the car in December 2018 so it was one of the first 2019 in the US.

have them show you in another car that noise and then define what is actually making the noise...

This. Heck, have them pull several cars and prove it.

We have an 18 E400 coupe purchased brand new. Depending on how disengage the parking brake while going into reverse and letting my foot off the brake, I would sometimes get a loud clunk. I don’t get it if I do it all slowly.

If you have not already done so speak with Service Manager and/or Shop Foreman and request they seek assistance from MB. Product Technical Support System (PTSS) is an online case management system that provides centralized assistance for dealers in resolving technical queries pertaining to vehicle service. In addition, reference attached bulletin.

Hello. Not sure if this is where I rely. I’m brand new to this. That price included extended warranty. And I drove ten hrs to get car in deleware.. paperwork fees high & it’s loaded with options. I need to find email address for above the VP of customer service of Mercedes. I’m not going to be pushed to the side. They need to do what’s right. May not be a lot of $ to them but it is to me. I don’t want a huge bill for whatever this issue is after warranty expires.

that’s what I’m afraid of! It mostly happens when I back out of garage but it has also happened a few times when running errands. Sometimes I can feel it not wanting to go in reverse.

Are you sure it isn't the noisy disengagement of the electric parking brake? On humid days or after being driven in the rain, both of my E's made a distinctive "rubbing" sound as the car moved a little before the parking brake was electronically disengaged. I always considered it normal and a small price to pay for the convenience of a parking brake that managed itself. Any chance you are hearing that type of noise, but maybe more often? The "not wanting to go in reverse" feeling could also be the electronic parking brake not releasing right away... mine did that once or twice - just used the manual release switch on the dash. One way to test this theory would be to start the car - release the parking brake manually and see if you hear the noise. If not - then perhaps the automatic parking brake release not functioning as intended.

As stated by some here, my CLS450 after being washed and sitting in my garage, it will make a "pull" noise when reversing (due to minor and residual water/moisture on the discs). But other than that issue, I have never encountered any such reverse noise with any of my multiple MB's.. Good luck with your issue. But I would not take the dealer's response as being gospel. Have the dealer pull other E Classes of the lot and simulate same condition as yours. At least you will have a point of reference to your satisfaction.

I always manually release the parking brake after the car has been sitting for a long time.

Question 1- Is it the E-brake sticking to the rotor and making the noise?

Question 2 - Is the transmission messed up and the dealer is making excuses?

OP I think the issues is you don’t know if the dealer is lying to you? And you don’t trust what they are telling you is the truth or BS?

What’s the power train warranty on this car? I think some factory powertrain warranty’s are just as long if not longer then the factory warranty. So why would the dealer be lying to you if the repair would be covered?

You need to get a second opinion. Pay to take it to an independent shop to get their opinion. If they say the transmission is busted then that’s your claim to take next steps at the dealer. Good luck!

Hello. I asked them to check parking brake also. And I did manually release it to see if that would help. It did not. I have over 20 videos w/ popping sound. See attached to hear it.

Hello. I asked them to check parking brake as well. I also manually released it & it still made popping sound. I have about 20 videos of it & had vehicle 6 months. See attached video for sound.

Thanks. I’ve tried to manually release emergency parking break & it still does it. I have appt on oct 20 to a diff Mercedes service dept. I will ask bout that warranty. I have ext warranty also. But good idea on taking to independent shop. I’ll do that also.

I would wait before taking it to an independent shop: that will be money out of your pocket and it might turn into "he said" - "she said".

I still cannot believe that MB regional said the sound was normal.

Perhaps you can set up an appointment with a MB regional service rep and produce the sound and then have him/her try to tell you it is normal?

Just my $.02.

When they say "character flaw", get them to demonstrate/replicate it with one of their cars: when my dealership said that they can't do much with fuel cap cover not sitting flush, they showed me that every last e class in their lot has this problem. This is the least they can do.

This is what I think needs to be done. It's the only way to verify there is or is not an issue.
