Shock absorber replacement

Hi,

I have 2016 S213, 80.000 km, with dynamic suspension. Had my car serviced and they noticed left rear shock had leaked and recommended that rear shocks should be replaced. Dealer quoted 890€/shock + labor 😯.

I ordered the shocks directly from Germany 560€/shock, seems they are manufactured for MB by Bilstein.
Does anyone know if replacing the shocks require coding or can I just replace them by myself?

Please pardon me being so naïve here...but what does "coding" mean? I don't do any repairs on my own, and I am a real "newbie" here...thanks in advance!

Means certain parts or modules need to be programmed and/or “initialized” to your specific vehicle.

Requires factory scan tool (Xentry software and C4, C5 or C6 multiplexer) and often connection to MB server. The latter is the problem for those not authorized.

Got it. So if it's not programmed or initialized -- it doesn't function properly?

If you ever have work done, repairs, etc. -- at a non-MB dealer -- you have to make sure they are an "authorized" MB repair shop, right? And that have access to all the proper, needed technology, specifically the MB server (whatever that is, LOL)? How would I know? I mean, I can ask, but the mechanic/shop can BS me just as easily as I can ask. This is part of the reason I have such bad luck with cars -- and why I am paranoid, LOL -- it seems that if you aren't extremely educated, you can easily get taken advantage of. Thanks.

Depends... but in short, yes some modules need programming to function correctly. Many indy's have the tools or they'll sub-out parts of a repair if needed. Best suggestion is to find a reputable shop.

Got it. Thanks. There's a few shops near me that are "MB Specialists" (so to speak). They advertise, say they are "authorized" and so on. So, how do you know if a shop has a connection to the MB server? Ask them? Take their word for it? Thanks again!

.
Connections to MB servers are really subscriptions that anyone can purchase that cover various length time frames.

Would the Front Shock require coding? Would you have a guide for the front one please.

Additionally, I think one of my front airmatic units is broken (or on the way out at least) as there is a film of oil around it... My question (in addtion to the abvoe request for the guide for the front) would be do I need to have all four wheels off the floor and do I need to use Xentry (or similar) to "de-activate" the air damper I am working on? Some on line videos would suggest I do. What I ideally would like to do is jack up the corner that needs replacing having put the suspension at max height and then disassemble/replace and let the car work out the new ride height?
