My E400 Wagon - rear suspension

Purchased this car earlier this year and as a avid BMW lover, I love it more :-) One thing that bothers me a bit is that the rear suspension is making an intermittent bonking noise from the right rear that is. MB said that the rear shocks need to be replaced which I think is strange for a 4 year old car. Anyone have experience with replacement and best alternatives?

Maybe I will do it myself. Great feedback from the experts. I will cancel my membership after one post on this forum.

I am not sure about your wagon but the 2020 E450 has the air suspension on the rear so alternative options may be limited. Do you know if yours has air suspension on the rear?

A lot depends on the mileage not just the age and how the car was used - carrying extra heavy weight in the rear for example.

Had same annoying noise from the right rear axle on my -450 Wagon.
The dealer replaced both rear shocks today under warranty. 90% of the noise is gone, but I can hear a faint clunk on rough roads still.
Decided to live with it however.

thank you, the noise is a bit intermitted.. I have been trying to understand the rationele. I will probably have both shocks in the rear replaced also. But not before I pull the tires off in the next weeks to check what it looks like.. :-)

Do you have the tech bulletin addressing this problem?
If not it is on the invoice after "knocking noises"

Yes it's strange. I'm new here myself, and am seeing some comments from 'veterans' that aren't helpful. Not sure what this is about. This forum is needed, and in general is very useful, and people are helpful. I think some people just like to hear themselves talk, so to speak.

To participate in these forums, one must be able to brush aside the goofy comments. Some folks just have a lot of time on their hands and consider themselves very witty. Just pass those folks by and look for the helpful comments, which will usually far outnumber those from our resident clowns.

You are right, I have been on Bimmerfest since 2002 and 5,000 + comments there. Not sure what I was expecting when I bought my first Mercedes :-) But I always appreciate excellent feedback and pointers to cure some of these issues.

I'm on both forums as well. There are some snarky people on Bimmerfest as well. Welcome to MBWorld. It is quite a great place to get info and to communicate with other fans and you'll see in time how valuable this forum is. Congrats on your wagon. She's a beauty.
