Well, I tried deactivating the fob by hitting "lock" twice but unfortunately the hatch still opens as soon as I hit the hatch unlock button (i.e., no 2-step process required). You are correct, however, that it should be a lot harder to accidentally trigger the hatch opening, because it really does require that you push and hold the button before it raises. Obviously, some other key or object must have pressed the hatch unlock button continuously while in some tight pocket for the hatch to open up accidentally. I think that from now on, when parking in my garage I will just check my MercedesMe Connect app to confirm all doors are closed and locked before I open the garage door. If it has been accidentally raised again, I can close it using the key fob. It seems like a lot of trouble but I guess in the scheme of things it's not such a big deal.

Thanks, W205. That's a good idea. And when you mentioned spare key, a light bulb went off and it occurred to me that maybe it's not MY key fob causing the problem. My wife who hardly ever drives the car carries the spare fob in her purse which, of course, also houses a host of other things that women carry in their purses. It's probably more likely something in that purse is pressing on a key fob. I will buy two faraday pouches!

Thanks, that's a good point. However, my wife often stays in the car while I pop into a shop or something, leaving the car in Park. She tells me that if she doesn't have her key her (and I have taken mine with me), the engine cuts off and/or she gets a repeated warning tone. When I return to the car I find a disgruntled wife and an open car door. I know this is really a First World problem but I think I'll give the faraday pouch a try lol.

You could also bring your wife with you while you pop into a shop or something.

I got another idea, tell your wife to take out the battery of the spare key. If your wife wants to start the engine, consider just placing the key in the marked spot to disable the immobilizer. That marked space is precisely used for starting an engine when a key fob battery is completely dead.

That would indicate your wife's key gets detected first and used to start the engine. Does she get in the car before you? Keep in mind if you put your wife's key in a Faraday pouch it will be shielded from the car, so she will get the beep and the engine cuts off. She would then have to take her key out of the pouch and restart the engine, which means she has to move over to the driver seat in order to push the brake pedal. Seems a lot easier if you just leave your key in the car if you run in the store leaving her behind.

Hmmm, in that case I guess you can tell your wife to leave the spare key home and then for you, remember the following: Leave key out then put face mask on. Or just write key! on the mask so when you grab it, you remember about it.
Edit: I guess the opposite can be done. Place key in the vehicle before you start to leave from your house then take off the face mask. Make it a habit just like wearing the face mask during the pandemic.
