MB dropping wagons, Audi & Porsche upping their game!

While MB has announced the demise of all their wagon models, Audi has just released photos of a stunning new electric wagon concept, while Porsche Taycan wagons are on the streets already. Oh well, I’m sure MB is too busy making sure every SUV they make is available as a coupe, that every vehicle has an AMG version, that they have made sure we have zero room to carry a spare and that even more Magno paints will be available. You go MB!

2016 E350 wagon
I was looking at that yesterday, will it get to North America though, if they build it? And 22" wheels are a bit much for me.

Both seem like really cool cars. Of the two, I think the Audi is more proportional, even if a bit futuristic looking.

No more MB:(
Both are great looking wagons, but I really like the Audi. Seems more practical and looks more in scale.

Unfortunately Mercedes thinks wagons should now resemble Subaru's or Volvo's unless you want to fork over 150-200K for an AMG rocket.

Will it get to North America: IMO yes

22" wheels are a bit much for me: Yes I agree. But do not fret: being an EV, range, range, range and charging speeds are #1, #2, #3 and #4 priorities: to increase range, as the Ford MachE did and continues to do, use taller narrower tires, not wider fatter tires. So I expect to see maximum of 18" or 19' wheels.

Two of my friends have upgraded the wagon wars in the past couple of months. I attended a Vandy baseball game last weekend with one who has taken delivery of an RS6 Audi wagon; a rather spectacular motorcar. Cabin is a bit smaller than the E class IMO, but that motor makes some very nice power. Another of my pals who is in Scottsdale for the winter just upgraded from a 2008 E55 wagon that he has enjoyed for some years, to a Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo GTS. I still prefer my E450 to either for what I do, but it goes without saying that there are some viable estates out there should one chose to 'move'.

Both are fancy looking station wagons, between both of them, if they sell them in the US, they will probably sell in very low numbers. SUV will be the demise of the wagon, I am one of the few sedan holdouts in my family, most of them drives SUVs. With the way our government is headed, they would rather give away money than to fix roads, the road conditions are getting worst every year. With all the potholes on the road, It just doesn’t make sense to drive around in a sedan with low profile runflats, short suspension travel and low ground clearance. It sadden me to say this but my next car might be a SUV.

2016 E350 wagon
Neither has the cargo capacity of the E wagon, which was my main factor when shopping.

Actually the Federal government is the main contributor to "give away money" for EV credits - the states are only a small part.

The states and local governments rather than the Federal government are responsible for the maintenance and repairs of all roads except interstates and in New York, the state and local governments and not the Federal governments maintains our Interstates.

But I agree with you, as compared to Europe, our roads are in a deplorable condition: From my point of view, I have always gone to the smallest tire available even on my Boxster: the incremental improvement in handling, going from a standard 18" wheel to a 19" or 20" is more than offset by the deterioration in the quality of the ride. through in more blowouts because of smaller sidewalls plus the added cost of replacement of 19" and/or 20" tires vs. 18" tires: not for me!

The Germans in their cars always followed function over form: I agree! while to some a 19" or 20" wheel might look better (not to me) than an 18" wheel, changing from 18" to 19" and/or 20" wheel is the opposite: form over function!

Just my $.02 and everyone is entitled to their own opinion!

The wheels & tires shown here on my all time favorite dream car, look fantastic to me, with those deep, flexible sidewalls. Nothing could be finer, in my opinIon.

2021 AMG E63s Wagon
Wish BMW would bring back the M5 or 5-Series Wagon. Prefer the BMW styling over Porsche + Audi. Test drove a 1999 540i Sport 6-stick sedan with only 282-hp on tap and have been a fan of of that formula ever since. Wagons in my mind just raise the bar over sedans. Still own a 2015 Chevy SS manual that the Australians modelled after the E39 benchmark. But first retired a Pontiac LS1 GTO and G8 GT. Sold wife's 2017 Chevy SS automatic only because she desired to sit higher in an SUV? 2021 AMG Wagon acquisition made up that Trauma...

The Porsche wagons are nice, but more so shooting-brakes and don’t offer much extra utility over their sedan/hatch counterparts. The Audi wagon is gorgeous, I hope the production model looks close to the concept. Based on the current A6 though, I imagine if the US does receive this model (which is unconfirmed) it will be an “Allroad” version. Even the Taycan is only offered in one “proper wagon” trim, GTS, which is fairly high up the ladder in price ($133k), all others feature cladding and standard raised ride heights.

We can add a +1 to love for MB wagons. Yesterday, at a stop light, a vehicle was honking at me and when I rolled down the window the driver just gushed about my wagon. He was smitten (with the car, just so we're clear)!
