New U.S. NHTSA rule for adaptive headlights - MB upgrade?

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a final rule in February allowing automakers to install adaptive driving beam headlights on new vehicles.

My E300 has "
DYNAMIC LED HEADLAMPS, SAE, RIGHT-HAND TRAFFIC." Do we think that MB will provide official software updates to give our U.S. cars adaptive capability? Certainly worth paying for, I think.

2020 E350
I have been following the rule changes a bit and wondering the same thing. I have seen some threads of 3rd party coding for them. I looked for the thread but cant seem to find it.
My 2020 E350 has the multi-beam. But the order I placed for a 2022 E450 on 3/12/2022 dealership said the multi-beam was not available.
Sales agent was not sure if it was due to chip shortage or not.

Recently had mine unlocked with remote coding from RJ automotive. $179 I believe was the total. Pretty cool - definitely noticeable on the dark roads near me.

he’s on the forum here and you can google his business page. Remote coding and diagnostics.

ordered the dongle , came in within a week, scheduled the session and within 20 minutes my headlights were activated. Pretty cool and easy process - nice to work with also.

I doubt it if MBUSA will do any retrofits for vehicles sold pre-rule changes. We would most likely will have to do the 3rd party unlock route...the 23 MY will probably have the feature unlocked from the factory.

I wonder, if this kind of 3rd party 'unlocking' is legal or not, having ramifications potentially voiding the factory warranty and, more importantly, voiding the insurance?

I seem to recall having a copy MB's instructions for re-coding a W212's headlights, so maybe it's possible they'll also go that route for the W213?

All good points/questions. Its just software so hopefully dealers will offer the retrofit/upgrade?
No idea if the 3rd party affects warranty or not. If you lease you would lose the expense of upgrading them, but then again 180 bucks probably won’t break the bank.

I have an order placed for a 2022 E450 which I could not order them for whatever reason.
My 2020 E350 is equipped with them and self-level, have auto high/low beam, all LED, swivel in slight turns and have corning lamps, but they do not dim independent LED sections and track oncoming traffic. If I understand correctly thats now allowed here in the US.

This may be worth it as you can get the autostop feature change to remember the last setting. It seems that the biggest benefit if that much of the road would be illuminated with the “high beam” but at the same time oncoming or cars you are approaching from behind would get reduced illumination, is that correct?

I imagine, if an MB dealer do the work, then it is highly likely to be legal.
The worst situation is that when you are involved in an accident and other parties claim that your headlights dazzled them, fully or partially causing the accident. The other parties' insurance examine your car and find the headlights are 'modified' and are not approved for your car model and model year. This would be a nightmare!
