Brake Pad Rattle

I replaced all brake pads on my E450 and noticed after I heard a loud metallic rattle when going over medium sized bumps like a sewer grate at 50-60km/h. When hitting similar bumps going into my driveway at low speeds there is no audible rattle.

I had noticed it the night I replaced the pads but wrote it off but now i keep hearing it.

I thought it could be a suspension issue but it popped up immediately after replacing the pads. Also I discovered when I tap the brakes when hitting these bumps there is no rattle.

I installed PowerStop ceramic pads. I am fairly certain this is a pad issue now but I haven’t been able to isolate this if it’s coming from the front or back.

I did see some similar posts but the caliper was different than mine. (The person had a floating caliper)

on the front I have the dual piston caliper and the rears are the floating calipers. I can’t imagine that the rear pads are moving around as they are snug and tight in the bracket.

I think it could be the front pads that slide/drop in, does anyone have any idea of something I could use to remedy this? I think they could be bouncing around in there.

Wow, funny cause I just replaced my front pads to Powerstop as well on my 2021 E450 All Terrain. Only hear a slight rattle on the left front. I noticed that the MB pads had a silver coloured plate that I tried to place on the ceramic pads but wouldn't fit. If you do the rear with the Powerstop, be aware that on the right rear, the caliper won't fit over the pads unless you hacksaw the outer pad 'double prongs' where the wear sensor plugs in. Been having a month long discussion with Powerstop on the issue and they claim they'll have to analyze a OEM set first. seems to be taking a while to get those OEM's!!

Hi,

I did the rears at the same time as front, I had no issues at all, they were the Z23 I believe…

the rattle is pretty loud when hitting a good bump sounds like something loose under the car, I think it’s the front pads too but not 100% sure…. Not sure what I can do to help other than add some more grease

What year is your car again? If it is a 2021, did you note the silver coloured sheaths on the MB front pads? I also had a E450 2019 which didn't have the sheaths. This time I used the Z17 pads.

Thanks again for your help. I did re-examine 35 and 50 and the tension against the pads is very taute and stiff. no prob with the pins either. The noise is very minor but 'gently' presents itself if going over a very bad road patch.

Mercedes E220d AMG Line Estate (S213) and Mercedes E220d AMG Line Cabriolet (A238)
Can I confirm that on the fixed 4 pot caliper (AMG Line cars) that the safety pin (6) on the frontcaliper that holds the two pins (1) is fitted on 2019 cars - I ask because I have recently changed my pads/discs and that pin was not present. I have had the car from new so know that no one else has changed them.

Cabriolet grayed out parts are not applicable to your VIN. Need VIN for estate.

Estate is WDD2132042F551319 - hopefully also not applicable?
