Road-trip prep

Driving my '18 E400 from NJ to Vegas next month, right around 39,000 miles. Anything I should do, look for, prep beforehand? TIA

I have a check list that includes things like removing loose items from the car, ensuring the proper tire pressures, measure tread depth, make sure you have done the proper maintenance, clean the windshield, and put a good coat of ceramic on the front end of the car to assist in bug removal. In my SCCA racing days, we would tape a check list to the drivers side front window, and initial each check as it was completed. My driving requirements are a bit different, but a good check list can ensure the optimum prep for a road trip. I am just back from a 1,000 miler, and am amazed at the competency of these vehicles. Enjoy the drive!

sounds about right. I usually make the trip in my Land Cruiser, but have a similar checklist. First time taking my Benz this far, so I wanted to see if anyone has specific things they get into. Debated PPF on the front end, or going old school and blue painters taping it. Time will tell.

Take several bottles of drinking water in case you have a breakdown someplace, like the middle of nowhere (a.k.a. Nevada).

I do trips between 800 and 1,000 miles in my (former) GLE and my E on a pretty regular basis, but none of my routes are that rural - your drive is a more challenging one given the remote nature of the western US. My long trip list includes: Small 12V air compressor, windshield wash fluid, extra coolant and oil in case you spring a leak and need to limp some distance, candy, peanuts, water, rain jacket, gloves, paper towels, bleach wipes, trash bags, toilet paper(don't laugh... anything can happen). I do a quick check under the hood, each tire and under the car before I go, but with the regular maintenance the car has, I keep it ready to drive 1,000 miles on zero notice.

I would go to AAA and pick up some 'free' old-fashioned maps as backup. If you rely totally online navigation, there might be long stretches of remote roads that might not have coverage (for both car onboard and your mobile phones) and you want to get prepared for that. Technically, GPS is everywhere but you never know.
Also, it is good that you give someone a copy of your trip plan/route, just in case something bad happens, someone would have an idea where to look.

Sounds about right, I always keep the paper map in whatever I drive. Usually make the trip out for offroading my Land Cruiser, so some of it is all redundancy, a few things I'll transfer from one to the other. With just shy of 40,000 on the clock, is there any major maintenance things that jump out?

I don't know exactly how pre-MBUX navigation/maps update works, but it may be similar to MBUX. Maps automatically update only in your selected home region OTA, but you can manually update all the remaining North America maps.

Log into Mercedes account online, download map update app, run app, it'll allow you to download all maps that aren't up to date on your car onto a USB drive, plug USB drive into car, and it'll update, takes about 30-45 mins. It's free for first 4 years I think.

Here's your service sheet and as a practical matter have local MB dealer check Vehicle Master Inquiry (VMI) for outstanding recalls & service campaigns.

Much appreciated. Gonna have the local MB run over it before I leave and make sure it's all up to par. I'm looking forward to some extended wheel time with the car, as the most has been some 200 mile runs.
