Thinking of purchasing a CPO 2021 E450. I was told The CPO warranty goes until 1/20/2025 OR when the vehicle hits 50K Miles... Once that is up, the 1 YEAR unlimited miles CPO warranty kicks in and I can purchase an additional 2 Year / Unlimited for $3,030 plus tax. Are CPO and the additional warranties worth the cost?

FYI, I have a 2019 E450. The warranty ended in December 2022.

I purchased a MB extended warranty for 3 years, 75,000 miles, no deductible for $2,200. In December, 2022 my car had only 30,000 miles, so an additional 45,000 miles for 3 years was more than sufficient. I think for 100,000 miles, it was a couple of hundred dollars extra.

Hope this helps.

The answer to your question is all about YOUR risk tolerance limit. Are you willing to roll the dice on the costs of repairing your E-class if out of warranty or want the security or peace of mind that these issues will be taken care of by paying it forward via extended warranty?

Only you can answer that question for you.

My 2020 E450 currently has ~15K miles and its factory warranty runs thru 09/23 with additional 1-yr CPO warranty ending 09/24. Hence through the next 18 months of usage, the reliability or otherwise will determine if I go for additional extended warranty or not.

As an anecdote, my 2013 SLK350 has been solidly reliable. Car was purchased as CPO in Jan 2017 with only 1900 miles, went out of warranty in Jan 2018, and has been cared for with regular scheduled maintenance and the usual replacements - brakes, tires, etc. Now at 107K miles, the car is trouble-free and a joy to own. Will I expect similar reliability for my current E450?

Time shall tell.

You can get additional quotes in the extended warranty subforum. You might be able to get it less for the extra two years. For the factory warranty, you should take it to an indy and make sure they find any issues before it expires. The factory is more comprehensive than CPO as it will cover cosmetic defects that CPO will not. The dealers aren't really supposed to be looking for warranty work unless you specifically mention it. Lots of threads out there of things that fail out of warranty but was at dealer just before and they never mentioned it. And yes it all depends on how lucky you feel. There will be issues, the question is whether they will happen in or out of warranty. Basically boils down to how much you drive it, things always pop up in the 60-150k range, question is whether it will be sooner or later. The 2021 is probably a good year, just got a facelift and there's not too much new in the later years.

On average, one will pay more for auto extended warranty than repairs in the same time period, someone has to pay for the insurance company’s overhead. The 2021 E450 is a mild hybrid which had some issues. Personally, I would never owned a German car without warranty.

Over the decades of owning BMW, Borgward, MB and VW cars I've never had a serious or costly repair in or out of warranty with one exception. The exception was an air suspension strut that had to be replaced out of warranty. Cost was about $2k. I keep my cars an average of 6 years.

The bottom line is that as a whole actual repairs cost less than extended warranties.

Its the little things that creep up and get you. I never had a major issue with my recent vehicles (although I may have my first with my 7 year old F-Pace) but I have had a few minor ones. The thing is minor issues on Mercs are still expensive. Its been a while but a couple examples from my experience with my w212: Aux bat (twice) $500 each time, seat motor (can't remember how much but >$500 ), seat heater failed (~$1k). There were a couple other minor issues covered, but I saved plenty as I only paid $1750 for the extra 2 years back then. Also, prices for repair work at the dealer have gone up astronomically since then.

I bought the extra 2 years for my CPO 2021 E450 (purchased about 2 months ago) and I recommend it for any German vehicle. You can do better than $3k from Jeff Jackson (mentioned several times in most extended warranty threads on MBWorld - contact details below) plus he is super cool and very easy to work with.
BTW, don't believe the F@I guy when he/she tries to push you to getting their package - you have 30 days to add it and you can do this from any MB dealership. When I bought mine he said things like "you have to get it now or else it will cost 20% more", "You can't get it from anyone but the dealer you bought the car from" "this is std MB pricing, you cant ge't a better deal" etc all of which were BS. He even made me sign a "waiver of liability" form saying that I "knowingly declined the offered extended CPO warranty". Another pretty high pressure sales tactic.

Jeff Jackson, Financial Services, Mercedes-Benz of Louisville, 502-894-6829

I also had 3 tires and two wheels covered on the wheel and tire insurance -> this was before the MB dealer F@I guys realized how much they could get for this package. I don't recommend getting this from the dealer. AAA offers wheel and tire, ding and dent PDR AND Key replacement all in one package. Dealer quoted me ~$2k for 1 year for just wheel and tire, I bought the AAA package for 5 years at just under $1k.

Agree: My extended warranty was also from Jeff Jackson. Highly recommend.

This is strictly a mileage question. Before 50k miles you are unlikely to have any major problems. Between 50k-100k we had several expensive repairs that were covered by the extended warranty.

I would rather go with Platinum Fidelity for 5 or 6 years with 100K miles with $100 ded for around $5000 or less.

I don’t see a question here.

To me, there is no right or wrong, however, it is all about risk management. You take on and absorb as much risk as you want, can tolerate, etc., without being financially/negatively impacted -- and you shift the risk you can't to a financial institution.

The OP was looking at a 2021 model in 2023. The car had coverage until Jan. 2025 OR when it hit 50k miles. Ironically, his post did not say how many miles the car had, LOL. Regardless, once the current CPO ended, he had an additional 12 months, unlimited mileage. He was looking at an additional 2 years after that -- for $3000 -- but all of that info isn't relevant for him to make the decision. His question was is it "worth the money" -- and the answer is, all factors considered, to some it is and to some it is not.
