New tires...gonna go with 245/45/19

Too many potholes in LA. I'm hoping the extra cushion will help with damage to the rims. It's not a big difference from the 245/40/19's that came on the car....so I figure it should be fine. Came on here to ask if anyone sees a reason why I shouldn't....

That’s exactly why I didn’t get low profile tires.

usually 45 aspect ratio is also considered a low profile tires. I have had many 45 profile tire bubble up or bent the rim.

Interesting: I have the stock 18" wheels. Three of my original Pirelli Centurato P7 developed bubbles on the sidewalls and I replaced them with OEM RF Pirelli Centurator P7 tires. All are aspect ratio of 45.

My tire store said anything under aspect ratio of 50 is considered "low profile".

Like most in the North East, potholes are a fact of life and why I went with the stock 18" wheel vs. the 19" or 20".

If there was a 50 aspect ratio, I would have in heart beat gone with it: give up minimal handling for smoother ride and more pothole protection!

Because of Covid it cost $400 plus a tire, including balancing for each replacement tire. (I also did the remaining tire as I wanted all new rubber. I have kept the fourth tire in my garage as a replacement/spare when and if needed)

There are many sizes available in 50 aspect ratio including these 37 245/50R18 tires from Pirelli.

I am in the northeast also and know exactly what you are saying about potholes.
Are the oem 18” tires already 45 ratio?

Yes.

If Mercedes had an option for 50/55 or even 60 I would have taken it!

The largest sidewall, 45, is on the 18 inch wheels. This is what I have.

I thought you upsize your tire ratio, my mistake.
What the OP is asking is if anyone have upsize their aspect ratio and if there is any ill affect beside the lower speedo and odometer. On a 18" rim, you could upsize to a 50 ratio tire and get more side wall. I think the jump from 45 to 50 will make a much bigger difference than the jump from 40 to 45 comfort and protection wise. If it is doable, it might be worth considering for me to upsize when its time to replace all 4 tires.
The debate between 18" and 19: have been talked about to death, it is really the individual's preference, the truth is, there is really minimal difference between the two. If you step up to 20" or down to 17", that is a different story.

Percentage wise the difference between 40 to 45 vs. 45 to 50 is greater so I would imagine the difference in comfort would also be greater.

Ditto with going between 18" wheel and 19" vs. 19" and 20": the percentage difference between 18" to 19" is greater than 19" to 20".

BTW, in the old days we use to call upsizing stage 1, stage 2 and stage 3.

If anyone have any picture of an E class with upsized aspect ratio tire, please post some pictures. Will it make the E class look like a chuck wagon?

I would not deviate from the manufacture spec. Your saying since you up the side wall, now you can freely run over any pothole you see? I wouldnt test that theory if I were you lol. I bent 4 rims on 55 height tires on 17 inch rims. I had a 2001 Audi A4, ran over anything I saw. Drove over small curbs even lol. I even tore a CV boot and damaged the CV axel because of how I drove. I learned the best way, through my wallet lol. You need an SUV my friend. Its your driving style not the tires.
