What format is your USB formatted too? Does it freeze as well using an SD card?

When formatting a USB or SD device the address is limited to 32 bits.
Use the default cluster size.(allocation unit).
Unless one has special needs, NTFS is the best format followed by exFAT.
Do not format as FAT32.

Good information, hence why I was curious what format is OP's storage media running in.

How many files are on the media? Per the Operator's Guide not all USB drives are compatible with the entertainment system. Personally, I use a 32 GB mSD in an SD adapter formatted as NTFS. It doesn't intrude into the console space. I have about 2k songs and 3 movies on it. (The movies are for when I'm waiting for my wife.)

I heard the partition table might affect it too (on top of if the COMAND version is old), GPT/GUID might yield issues, MBR might not.

Are you plugging in the USB when the computer is booting up? That might explain why it works if you re-insert it the second time. Try leaving the USB in the socket or maybe try another USB drive.

This is a good question, because the audio head takes a bit longer time to fully boot up. I would cite where I heard this but I forgot, so I can't say 100% if that's true or not. Just a thought.

My 2019 takes forever to load up audio, the 2018 might have a older unit that is slower. Trying to insert and recognize the usb drive when the audio program is still loading might cause issues.

My '18 E300 with COMAND loads 2,100 files of audio & video in a few seconds of when I either start the car or turn the system on. I use the SD slot with a mSD card and SD adapter. I don't have a USB stick or I'd compare loading times.

2018 E400 Coupe
In the audio system of my 2018 E400 Coupe I have an old 128GB 95MB/s SD card in NTFS format. It's loaded with 4,834 tracks divided into four categories: Classical Albums (1,074 files in 175 folders), Jazz Albums (629 files in 66 folders), Rock, Folk & Other Albums (741 files in 70 folders), and Miscellaneous MP3s (2,090 files, 0 folders), a total of 29.8 GBs of music. The car has no problems instantly finding or playing any of the files; the only problem is choosing what I want to listen to! 😵

I have mine set to random play. I do not need to make more decisions, especially while driving.
