'23 E450 Rear Window Tint

I just received my new 2023 E450W4 and took it to the detail shop for PPF, ceramic coating, and windows tinting. However, the detail shop said there's a risk with tinting the rear window and destroying some modules in the back. After combing numerous threads it seems to be a 50-50 chance of having it tinted with no issues or having a tow truck come pick it up and waiting weeks for replacement parts. The detail shop said I'd need to sign a waiver excluding them from any responsibility should it be damaged, however, they will do everything they can to avoid this from happening by only using as much water as needed and using a roll to collect excess water. I spoke with my MB sales guy and he said the dealership won't tint the rear or front windows for this reason, but he has seen alot of cars with rear or even front window tint that had no issues. I think it comes down to having a good detail shop, but I don't know I'm if I want to take the risk. Especially on a car I've waited 10 months to get.

Has anyone had their rear windows tinted and how did they avoid destroying the modules in the back?

Thanks

Good grief, practically EVERY Mercedes (if not ALL) in the American south has tinted windows everywhere except the windshield. I've had 2 MBs loaded with rear window modules and defroster lines, etc, and both have been tinted without any issues at all. There are occasional threads about defroster wires accidentally cut during installation. But those are few and far between.

I'd find a different tint shop that is more confident they can do the work correctly. Or have the tinting done on your next trip south, where they do this stuff without skipping a beat.

As @DFWdude alluded too,

Anywhere in the south they should be able to knock it out without issues. Heck with all the MB's in south Fl area and majority tinted...yeah, should not be an issue. Unfortunately best guess is that specific shop probably got burned by a customer before hence the apprehension and totally understandable.

Sometimes these "issues" just get promulgated forward from just a few cases, like tint causing sunroof glass to explode. There are plenty of owners without the issue who just don't report it because... It was never an issue. Just like the post above, plenty of owners in warm climates (Arizona, Nevada, Texas too) get their windows tinted without issue.

I had all the windows on my 2018 E400 Coupe (including the windshield) tinted with "Llumar FormulaOne Stratos Nano-Ceramic Window Tint" shortly after I bought it and haven't had a single problem with any of it. The shop that did the work (that's all they do) was very highly rated. Find someone who knows what they're doing if you want it done right.

I not only had mine tinted, but had the previous owners' tint removed at the same time, so I'm sure there were plenty of juices flowing.

No issues here at all, I agree with the others here that a problem caused by tinting seems rare.

I have a film on my car in all glass areas, including the front windshield. Transparent film and not the dark colored version. Love it !

There were instances of the 206 C-Class having the rear SAM die due to tinting the rear window. I think they now install a plastic cover over the SAM to prevent the issue.

It's done

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I went ahead and told them to do and we had no issue. They're a good shop and have done work on two of my other cars and just wanted to ensure I was aware of some potential risks. They took all the necessary precautions.

I think the tint shop is confusing your vehicle with the new generation of C-Class vehicles (W206) which had a variety of electrical issues occurring from tinting the rear windows where water would seep down the inside of the door panel and short out an important SAM module located there.
