Instructions needed for replacing switch for fold-down seat on wagon

Instructions needed for replacing switch for fold-down seat on wagon

The cover for the fold-down seat back on my E400 wagon broke, so I bought a new one for around $42. They don't just sell the plastic cover so I had to buy the whole switch that came with a new cover. Now I have to replace the whole switch. Attached are photos of the location of the switch and the new switch itself.

2018 E400 4MATIC wagon (S213)
I did the same repair a couple months ago because the plastic hinge on the switch/button broke off on my 2018 E400 wagon. The switch/button can't be simply replaced with a replacement part because the switch block needs to be disassembled to attach the part correctly. Not worth the effort IMHO.

Anyhooo. Here's the quick summary of what I did - it took a little over an hour to remove and replace everything.
  1. Removed foam seal around the door for access - easily pulls off and pushes back into place.
  2. Removed plastic trim that keeps carpet in place around floor and door for access to screws - pull gently to avoid breaking plastic tabs.
  3. Removed the rear bench seat (see attached doc "install rear seat cushion.pdf").
  4. Removed the side bolster (see attached doc "install seat side bolster for backrest in rear.pdf").
  5. Replaced switch block - gently remove electrical connector from plastic harness.
For future reference if others are facing a similar repair, I bought a new switch block from my local MB dealer and picked it up from the parts desk. It cost $35.02 after tax.

I did this just now and it took me around an hour.

I have a couple of tips:

1. the rear seat bottom is easy to remove -- just pull up on it on both sides.
2. I unbolted the outboard seatbelt bolt (a torx bolt) after removing the side bolster, but I'm not sure this was necessary.
3. Folding down the seat-back on the side you're working on makes it easier.
4. I would also remove the cargo cover to make things easier.
5. I found the hardest part to be removal of the old switch. I removed the electrical connector from the old switch, then removed the whole panel that it snapped into. To remove the plastic panel, you have to first remove the plastic threshold that covers the floor carpeting. It is held in place by a 10mm hex nut and I think three metal clips that the plastic threshold tabs go into. Then you have to unbolt (10mm hex nut) the upper plastic piece that the switch is inserted into. This also has tabs that snap into metal clips. You can then remove the whole plastic piece. I used a plastic pry bar to widen the slot that the switch snapped into and the switch came right out. I don't think I could have removed the switch from the plastic panel without removing the panel from the car. The new switch snapped right into the plastic panel from the backside.
6. Next connect the white electrical connector to the switch and reinstall the top plastic panel and then the plastic threshold that covers the floor carpeting.

do either of you know if the rear seat release switches in the cargo hatch area in the w213 wagon are the same as the switches that you used to replace at the second row seat backs? the little hinged silver portion of the switch in the cargo area on the passenger side of my wagon broke off and i can't find the part in the online parts catalogs. i found a knockoff with a mercedes part number - and reverse searching for that gave me this result - any ideas if this is the right part number? i can't tell if this is the little silver portion or the entire switch assembly.

The same thing happened to me. The little silver cover for the switch broke off and this part isn't available separately. You have to buy the whole switch. The part number from my invoice is: 213-905-55-03-64-9051. The last 6 digits are the same as the one you have, so it seems to be the same part, which makes sense. Why would they have two different parts that do the same thing? I don't have any instructions on replacing the cargo area switch, but with all the PDF instructions and our instructions, you should be able to figure it out. I was very careful to not break any plastic clips, which I'm sure a Mercedes dealer mechanic would not have cared about as long as the customer couldn't see what he broke. If you don't think you can do it yourself, you might want to just buy the part and take the car to an auto upholstery shop. They'll know how to take car interiors apart. That was my fallback option. Good luck and tell us how it went.

Is there a directory for the PDF instruction sheets or a reference thread you can point me to? I searched for a while this morning and have found a few of them, but was not able to find one for the W213 rear cargo area between the C and D pillars. I may just not be using the right search terms??

Do you have a link where I can find similar docs to what you shared here - specially this type of detailed (factory?) instruction for removing the panels in the cargo area of the s213?
