Official fuel tank size? (USA)

Hi all,

I currently own a 2019 CLS450 and am considering a new E450. One of the things I love about the CLS is its massive fuel tank, which is 21.1 gallons. I thought the new E-Class would have the same fuel tank size as the CLS and previous generation W213 E-Class, however there's conflicting information on the actual tank size. The EPA claims that it's still 21.1 gallons for the 2024 E450, however on the Mercedes Benz USA official site, they list the tank size as being 17.4 gallons. Can one of you kind gentleman verify which one is the correct number? It would be a shame if the fuel size has indeed been drastically reduced to such an extent.

I owned a W213 E400 (2018) with the 21 gal tank, now I have the 2024 E450 W214 and it has the smaller 17.5 gallon tank.

.
IMO it is to reduce weight to improve fuel efficiency ratings. At standard temperature 1 gallon weighs 6 pounds 2.43 ounces depending on brand and additives.

As you correctly point out, my 2019 E450 has the 21.1 gallon tank which I love - actually on trips I love the estimated range of over 600 miles! Because the fuel economy of the E350 is slightly better, Mercedes equipped them with the 17.4 gallon tank, theoretically giving the same range. In reality this is not true as my E450 on the open road gets between 32 and 34 mpg, which is only marginally less than the E350.

It would be shame if for MY 2025 the E450 went to the smaller tank - but I doubt anything can be done - just as the luxury version of the MY 2025 is not available in the US - but almost everywhere else.

Thank you for confirming, everyone. Very strange and unfortunate decision on MB's part when the fuel economy appears to be the same between the prior and current generation.

Perhaps both are correct? My 2022 E450 AT owners manual states 21.1 gallons of which 3.2 gallons is reserve. Maybe the MB site is not including the ‘reserve’ portion?

One of the most annoying things about my 2022 is that the ‘miles to empty’ stops displaying when you get to the reserve…just when you need it most.

I wonder if any of this is related to the fuel pump recall the W213 had.

Ah, thanks for pointing out the owner's manual. I didn't think to look at that - but it would appear that the W214 E450 has a confirmed fuel tank size of 17.4 gallons with 1.8 gallons of reserve. So not only has the fuel tank gotten smaller, so has the reserve tank. Again, very strange and disappointing decision on MB's part.

So do we think the car takes 17.4 gallons of fuel or 19.2?

Since the 17.4 gallons is labelled as the "total fuel tank capacity" I would think that that number already includes the reserve amount. Meaning that we have only 15.6 gallons until it's labelled as "empty" on the gauges before going into reserve.

On the bright side, this is still a larger fuel tank than the new BMW 5 Series which maxes out at 15.9 gallons, though it does get slightly better fuel economy.
