E/W214: Engine reliability: E350 vs E450
Just strictly speaking from reliability perspective, the M256 in the 450 will be more reliable, it was on the market for longer than the M254 in the 350. Then there is also the fact that the six cylinder doesn't have to work as hard as the four cylinder to complete the same task.

M254 is a troubled engine (cylinder head failures) and it is descended from a long line of troubled MB four-bangers. Looks like you made the right choice to stay away from the M254.

I haven't heard of any cylinder head failures yet in the M254. If you can point me to some examples, please do. From what I understand, the M254 has very little in common with the genuinely troubled M274 and M264 before it, and is rather far more related to the M256.

I guess the M274 had wrist pin issues on early batch, later batch had cracked piston 1 issues then the M264 came and it had cylinder head issues (I think?), the M254 might be the third times a charm we had been waiting for?
