Improved E53 tire wear with lowered pressure

My E53 is equipped with staggered 20" wheels and Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 tires. I previously reported tread depth of 8.5/32 front and 8/32 rear at 6700 miles. Cold tire pressures were set to 38/49 front/rear while I was on a cross-Country trip with a fully loaded car during the first month of ownership. All the tires were wearing evenly except for the passenger side rear tire which was measuring 7/32 in the center grooves and 8/32 in the outer grooves. I rotated the rear tires from side-to-side and lowered the tire pressures to 36/40 when I took the measurements back in March.

The lower tire pressures noticeably improved the ride quality. Today, at 10500 miles I checked the tread depth on the tires. The front tires are now just below 8/32 and still wearing evenly across the tire. The passenger side rear tire is now measuring 7/32 across all grooves and I no longer see excessive wear on the inner grooves. The driver side rear tire (originally on the passenger side) is now showing a 7/32 tread depth on the outer grooves and 6/32 on the inner groove. I was driving more highway miles on the first 6700 miles than on the last 3800 miles, but I think its safe to assume that the improved tire wear on the passenger side rear tire can be attributed to the lower pressure.

I am curious to learn if other E53 owners are experiencing uneven tire wear on the passenger side rear tire when tire pressures are set to the higher factory recommended levels.

Regardless of tire pressure, that is pretty impressive wear. At the rate you are going, 40,000 miles plus, seems to reasonable!

Congrats!

Encouraging case study for the all season tires - ordered same for incoming E53 wagon.

I'm not sure where my tires started as far as initial tread depth but I just measured and results are below. I have 9,311 on these tires which are the original tires that came with the car and are the Pirelli P-Zero PZ4 summer tire. They were removed in November to put on Pirelli Centuro Weatheractive and then put back on in April. When these are done, I'll likely go to Michelin. My wheels are 20" staggered setup with 245/40R20 XL in the front and 275/35R20 XL in the rear. I keep my tires at 37 psi all around which is the factory spec on the fuel tank.

Front Right: 8/32 (inside), 7/32 (outside) - wearing on outside more
Front Left: 5.8/32 (inside), 6.4/32 (outside) - wearing on inside more
Rear Right: 6.4/32 (inside), 7.4/32 (outside) - wearing on inside more
Rear Left: 5.8/32 (inside), 5.8/32 (outside) - even wear

It looks like mine are wearing less on the passenger (right) side than on the driver side. I did rotate them side to side at 5,364 miles where they were removed from the original wheels and mounted on new after market wheels. I never took the tread depth measurements though. Taking them with a caliper made it a little more difficult and I can't rule out improper measurements although I measured twice. The inner tread on the front are very wide and a bit hard ensuring an accurate measurement. Looks like my tires are wearing a bit more than yours assuming they both started at the same initial tread depth. I do a lot of country road driving with curvy roads so that may account for some of it. Rarely do I drive aggressively and more often am pretty chill, but have been known to push it every now and again. I'm going to make it a point of monitoring tread depth more frequently so I can have more info on how the car and tires are performing.

Assuming that the last 4000 miles were split equally between the Summer and Winter tires, the driver-side tires which are currently showing more wear, have spent over twice as many miles on the passenger side of the car.

The summer tires were driven 5,364 miles before switching to my winter tires which were on for 4,031 miles before switching back to the summer tires (swapped left to right) that have now been on another 4,211 miles for a total of 9,575, not 9,311 as I stated previously on these tires. This means the current right side tires were on the left 56% of the miles and now on the right 44% of the miles. Again, I could have measured wrong and I only measured in one spot for inner and outer on each tire. Maybe I'll remeasure just to be sure I got accurate measurements.

I misread your post. I thought you had 9311 miles in total including the Winter tires. I am surprised that the wear pattern on your tires is so much different from what it is on my car.

Lowering tire pressure also helps with comfort as well although tire noise might be affected.
