Driver Display mounted phone holder

Several manufacturers supply model specific driver display phone mounts with prices ranging from $26 to $55. @L1Wolf referenced the FICS unit in the modified Proclip phone mount thread I started earlier this year.

Amazon Amazon

This particular driver display features a 17mm ball post on both the left and right side of the screen. I believe that the left ball post can be removed since it is not shown in one of the photos in the listing. This phone mount has one important feature that distinguishes it from competing products - it does not require double-sided adhesive tape to keep it in place. The videos in the Amazon listing show how the phone holder relies on a friction fit to install it allowing it to be easily removed. Unfortunately, the FICS mount for the W214 is not currently available.

The other available driver display phone mounts are usually secured in place with a strip of double-sided adhesive foam tape. This mounting method does not appeal to me since it complicates the removal of the driver display if necessary. I decided to try the Masergogo phone holder even though I don't really like the "wing" on the right side that allows the height of the ball post to be adjusted.

I added a strip of 1/4" wide by 1/16" thick foam (adhesive on one side) along the bottom inside edge of the mount to convert it to a friction fit unit. I did not remove the red plastic film from the double-sided adhesive tape supplied with the mount. I also discarded the adjustable phone holder and replaced it with the MagSafe holder. I plan to check out other driver display phone mounts with a fixed position ball post in hopes of finding one that looks better than the Masergogo one.

I've never been a fan of using double sided tape for anything in the dash area. Too much heat over time will likely cause it to fail and it can make a mess when trying to remove it eventually. I prefer things that clip on in a way that does not rely on cheep springs or plastic tabs that can break due to sun and heat exposure. I had a nice one for my W212 that was wrapped in leather and had metal clips wrapped in vinyl. Easy to install and remove without any damage. I don't have a need for a dash mount in the W214, but the one you got now looks like a good option. I would likely go for one that mounted to the right of the center console myself. I've seen a few that looked pretty good, but not sure if they are a nuisance to a passenger when sitting in that seat. I like the clean look of not having the phone out at all so not a problem I need to worry about. It stays happily in the center console on the charge pad.

I decided to try another driver instrument display phone holder with a fixed position ball stud.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/315202412812

While I preferred the way the ball stud appears on this mount, the overall quality and fit of this product is not as good as the Masergogo phone holder shown in post #1 above. This product does not fully seat over the top edge of the cockpit display and part of the aluminum frame around the display is not covered. I requested and received a refund for this phone holder.

why do you need a phone holder when texts and calls are automatically handled when the phone is paired? it seems like a waste of money.

Several reasons...

- 90% of the time that I am driving there are two phones in the car and only one factory wireless charger.
- The wireless charging pad ahead of the cup holders is finicky. My wife has more patience so she uses the built in charger.
- I prefer the more reliable MagSafe charger on the cockpit screen mount which is not buried behind stuff in the cup holder compartment.

I modified the better fitting Masergogo phone holder to eliminate the oversized adjustable "ear" that I found objectionable. I used a Dremel tool, Xacto saw and mill file to remove the adjustable part of the phone holder.

Are you in the car so long to require charging your phone? I use my Galaxy S24 a lot and it still needs charging only once a day.
I keep my phone in my pocket and use the car for voice and messaging via the Bluetooth connection.

I average about 50 hours/month in the car and frequently make 600 to 800 mile round trips. I find the dash mounted phone holder is more convenient to use than the built-in wireless charging pad.

You don't use the MB built-in voice commands and wheel mounted controls?
I use the steering wheel mounted phone button or voice button to place/answer calls and text messages.
My phone battery is good for a full day (16-20 hours) of heavy use. I never need to charge the phone in the car even on long trips.

Yes I use voice commands to make calls. I also use the steering wheel buttons to accept and end calls. I prefer the ease of storing the phone on the dash mounted phone holder rather than on the hidden charging pad. I probably don't need to charge the phone while driving, but I like the magnetic holder over the spring loaded grabber type. Charging the phone in the car is also more convenient than setting up chargers in hotels when on road trips.
