2026 E53 Wagon - Winter Driving

I'm about to place an order for an E53 Wagon to replace my Audi SQ5. It will be parked outside and used as a daily driver. With winter in southern Ontario extreme this year, I'm interested in feedback on how this car performs in bad weather - with excellent snow tires of course!

Thanks,
Herb ...

Sure - understood. I'm curious about the general driving characteristics compared to an SUV like my Audi SQ5. My initial impressions on the test drive were good as I didn't notice a huge difference in visibility or road height (the car wasn't too low). That said, with summer performance tires on the test car, I had no ability to test driving on slippery roads or deep snow. How good is the traction? Does it "plow" in deep snow? Anyone get stuck? Etc.

I have driven short distances (1/2 mile) at slow speed (< 20 mph) on unplowed roads in 4" deep snow in "Slippery" mode with no issues on A/S tires in my W214 E53 sedan. Anything deeper would probably fill up the lower front grille opening very quickly.

I've got an E 53 wagon with winter tires and have gotten to drive in all sorts of winter conditions this year, from deep snow to very slick conditions and It's handled it all with ease. With winter tires and as heavy as it is, it stays planted really well. Slippery mode is perfect for slick conditions, though obviously isn't magic. I do have the dynamic plus package with the active diff, that can make a difference, but have not driven one without it i can't say if it really does. I wrote a review of slippery mode in a thread earlier this year.

Wow ... that's really encouraging. The E53 Wagon I'm ordering has all the goodies so looking forward to the experience. Can you send me the link to your review of slippery mode?

I have 500 miles on an E53 during the recent unusually cold weather. It has the Pilot Sport All Season tires. I have been very pleased with the tires and car in freezing cold rain, snow and ice. You have the option of using Pilot Alpin 20" winter tires if you want some more winter performance in Ontario.

The other day, as I was coming to a stop at an intersection, the E 53 hit an ice patch and skidded to the left. Then it moved back to the right, perfectly on the intended path. Maybe I moved the steering wheel to direct the car to the right, but I would have expected the car to plow/understeer on the ice and to keep going to the left. I think the car knew my intended direction and applied some braking on the wheels with traction to help the car go where I wanted. It was almost magical how the E 53 got back to the intended path on ice. I've never experienced that in a car before. I think one of the many computers in the car did its job very well.

I haven't had the car long enough to really know how the car and the all-season tires perform, but at this point I am very impressed with the winter handling.
