Final Assembly - USA

Placed an order with dealer a month ago with refundable deposit. Days before Biden signed the Inflation Reduction Act, tried to get my dealer to make part of that nonrefundable in order to secure a "Written Binding Contract". However, according to them, final assembly of the EqB is actually in the United States, so they will continue to have the $7,500 until the end of the year. Does this sound legit?

it is not legit.

The EQB is currently assembled in Hungary and China, with the USA receiving the ones from Hungary.

The upcoming EQS SUV and EQE SUVs will be built in Alabama, but there are also new limits on vehicle price and personal income for the new tax rebates going forward.

Supposedly, the dealer said that once it gets here, run boards and other things are added here. They said that will suffice for the final assembly requirement. Is this also not legit?

Note that even MB sent a memo to dealers saying that the EQB final assembly does not occur in the USA.

Over the years, numerous automakers have exported "kits" to the USA where a partially assembled vehicle and its remaining parts are assembled in the USA to end-run various import rules and/or taxes. In those cases, it's far more than installing a running board or a license plate frame at the VPC.

Not even close. The window sticker for a new car shows where final assembly is. EQB's are built in Hungary.

Unfortunately you were lied to. As someone else said, MB sent a memo to all dealers on 8/16 and clearly stated the EQB is not eligible for the tax credit due to the North American build requirement.

My salesperson basically said a week or two ago we would have to see compare what the window sticker said about final assembly. IOW, even retailers were not clear on all of this and not sure we should have expected them to be. Very dynamic situation and this IRA was very unbalanced in the US with special interests in the EV market prevailing with winners and losers. In my view, if you want more EV you don’t penalize people mid-purchase and pick US mfg over long-time global partners (e.g. MB) or set income thresholds and price thresholds that favor a brand and put another out of favor.

Now, has anyone received a 2022 yet? Has anyone received a 2023 yet? Tell us about it!

I don't think any been released yet, and the clock is ticking if they are still targeting August.

FWIW, my dealer was supposedly having their MB rep visit this past week with a factory EQB for dealer training and their single 2022 has not yet been shipped to them. Also, my 2023 was supposed to have been built late last week, so hopefully I'll get an update this week from them.

i kinda thought so. Those “effective immediately” changes to final assembly, and income phase outs for 2023 are total b.s. Not fair to mfg or consumer. Makes business planning difficult for both

keep us posted - I think we will be some of the first in the country. I already have my charge point installed.

Best, WDV

I have a CarMax offer that expires this Thursday. I’m struggling whether or not to move forward with it, which will temporarily make us a one car family until my ‘22 EQB arrives. While every yin at MB keeps saying the delivery is imminent, I have a fear of additional delays that could push things out well into September. The lack of transparency and clarity coming from MB is quite frustrating.

Maybe hold your car while you wait. I was told August - September for delivery of mine. I think it could be 2023 before I see the 2023. The fact that you await a 2022 and don’t have it is a good indication.

I think it will be worth the wait.

They don't care whether you get the credit or not. They just want their sales commission. $7500 is way to much to trust a "sales person" on minimum wage+commisson
