Dashcam Video Quality

I have to say I'm less than impressed with the dashcam. It's worth the $200 "subscription" I paid but I really thought since the fancy AR camera was a requirement the video would be much better. Here's a recent example... I turned in front of a truck that was passing people on right at 80 MPH and guy rode my butt for a while then cut in front of me and hit his brakes. If I had rear ended him guess it would have been worth something but if he had taken a couple shots at me this video would be useless. There must be a million trucks like that in Houston and I can't even make out a plate number.

FWIW, almost every dash am I've ever owned is almost entirely useless at getting plat numbers - pretty ironic, no? I've had cheapie $100 Costco cams to $250 Garmins, all the same result. The one in the MB EQE I find is the best I've had, personally. Not saying a better one isn't possible, it just seems to be the state of things. The aspect ratio and the lighting compensation is excellent. I do agree it could do better on license plates farther away, though you have to balance that with the camera field of view and perspective.

It's not just the resolution its also the choppiness. Seems like less than 30 FPS at times in this video. Reminds me of my old PC from the 90's that had to share interrupt request lines. In fact, the reason you can't see me pulling out in front of this guy is because it takes that long for the camera to initialize. I'm literally out of the parking lot and driving down the road when the "dashcam recording started" message annoyingly pops up. I know The Three Stooges who work at MB really wanted it to pop up a second or two AFTER the accident just to completely drive me nuts but luckily that didn't happen on this day.

Could the startup delay have anything to do with the "speed" of the storage chip? There are many different quality (i.e. speed) SD Cards out there for cameras. Fast ones can be pretty expensive. I'm not sure whether USB sticks or even basic external SSD USB drives can measure up to the speed of the camera SD Cards. This is just my preliminary thought. I'm still only a few weeks into my new EQE SUV and really haven't spent any time fussing with the DashCam yet. I will eventually experiment and compare basic USB/USB-SSD storage to an extremely fast SD Camera card to find out if there is any difference in DashCam performance. Will report back...

Sony Starvis 2 sensor with 2k or 4k resolution. Plenty of YouTube dashcam reviews with this sensor. I'm partial to viofo, particularly A119 mini 2 @ $100 on sale. Cams with this sensor gives you a much higher probability of capturing license plates even at night. They also record sound too so you could shout out the plate if you can train your mind to do so in such an event.

My thread about the 1TB M.2 Intel SSD drive I'm using is in the EQE sedan forum. There's no thumb drive that even comes close speed-wise. And the camera view is working on center screen when I'm reversing so I don't think it's the camera hardware itself. The problem, as usual, is the dashcam software. There shouldn't be a need for a popup informing me that recording has started at all. Just start recording when I start the vehicle like a $50 dashcam from Walmart.

What dashcam have you used before?
The video looks fine to me - not the best but it is similar to many other dashcam video.
You need the latest sensor and 4k to get a chance (and still not always possible) to read license plate. And you should already know that you won't get that with MB's dashcam.

Looks to me like the problem is too much system memory is being used for disk caching. I manually deleted all the files and it now initializes quickly again. So next time I notice it getting slow I'm going to remove it and see how much of the 1TB space is being used and then repartition my drive to be smaller than that. Hopefully that'll be a good work-around for MB's misconfiguration.
