Dealers are Funny

Got this email from my dealer today.

Two questions came to mind when I got this:
1 - Why didn't my car tell ME that my keyf ob battery was low?
2 - If I wanted to have my dealer replace the battery, why do I have to schedule a service appointment for that??
(not looking for answers to these questions, these are just "shake my head" kind of moments)

It is not the dealership that sent you the message. It is an automatic message from MB through Mercedes Me connect I guess they call it Mercedes Benz Connect, since your preferred or selling dealership is set to that dealership, it is therefore mentioned.

What happened is that the car reported the status to the cloud and the cloud automatically generated this message.

They'll probably charge you $14 to replace a $2 battery.

My dealership replaces ALL key fob batteries FOC. You walk in to Parts, hand the guy your key fob, he replaces the battery, hands you back your key fob and you leave. No question asked.

The free battery is nice, but really . . . popping the cover off the fob and DIY takes only minutes.

I think it's somewhere in the middle. I beleive that it's a marketing service, loosely run (farmed out) by Mercedes, to which the dealer subscribes. I say this because of:
1 - Dealer branding in the email, no Mercedes-specific branding other than the logo
2 - The "Schedule Service" link takes me straight to the dealer web site
3 - The "from" domain (mercedesmax.com) info is proxied by a US registrar making useful info somewhat hidden in ICANN, but mbusa.com clearly shows that Mercedes owns the domain, and it's handled through their normal registrar in Germany (Key-Systems GmbH)

ICANN "whois" for mercedesmax.com:
