2022 Mercedes EQS 580
The AMG seems to look like a 580 with AMG package, larger spoiler and different wheels. I was expecting more differentiation.

I wonder if their focus will be on the performance aspects of the EQS.

I'm not expecting much difference in the looks other than the grill and perhaps the diffuser.

So, the F-150 Lightning gets a 14.1 cu ft frunk...

...and the EQS, 0.0 cu ft.

Granted, this has a lot to do with overall exterior dimensions and shape, but a Tesla Model S still has a small frunk. In an EQS, the owner can't even open up the hood!

While it would be nice to have a trunk, I think you have to look at the package. Nitpicking one item is a waste of time. Every car has a few features to nit pick. As a complete package, the EQS is far more impressive than the Model S or the F150 lightning.

I think a frunk is a nice feature on a truck ... great place to lock up the laptop, wife's purse, etc. when we stop for dinner on the way home.

Amazingly the new VW BEV was designed without a frunk, only space in back beneath the hatchback. Not as secure ...

I have a good friend who purchased a Tesla Model Y. It quickly became apparent that he and many other Tesla owners are very protective of Tesla and just a tad near-sighted when it comes to the emerging EV market. While Tesla deserves a lot of credit for forging into the EV world all alone with mostly nay-sayers all around, I wonder what they think about the many upcoming EV model soon to enter their market? Many current owners of gas/diesel powered vehicles who say they would never own an EV will buy their first EV in the next 5 to 10 years. They'll have little choice at some point. Just my two-cents (only worth half of cent).

Agreed, I'm likely to get an EQS myself, eventually. But imo if one considers Tesla's Supercharger network to be part of the "package" it does improve Tesla's merits some.

Yeah for sure. If you are someone who wants an EV to do road trips.

A lot of Tesla owners have no idea of the sophisticated technology you get in a Mercedes Benz. They have never experienced a HUD, or surround view cameras, or augmented reality navigation, a fragrance system, cooled cupholders, or an active matrix headlight, or a Burmester High-end sound system. Mr next door neighbor for instance has 3 Tesla's and raves about the technology. But his previous cars were a Range Rover from around 2015 and an E46 m3. Neither of those cars have the latest tech. The 2015 Rover would have an old school nav, no CarPlay, no HUD, Xenon lights, etc. So he has no idea what the state of the art is in 2021. He just knows the Tesla is better than the older cars he used to drive.

FWIW I just ordered a Tesla Model Y. It is an amazing car for $50k. If I bought a GLC300 for $50k, I would get a stripped base model with too little power. I think this price point is where Tesla excels. Once you get to the $100k plus cars they can't hold a candle to Mercedes.

EQS Ordering Information Update (USA)

A few changes to the US EQS ordering as of 5/25/21

1) Trim Nomenclature is Changing (will apply to other vehicles)
 • Premium -> No change
 • Exclusive -> previously called ‘Advanced’
 • Pinnacle -> previously called ‘Executive’
2) Automatic Comfort Doors will have delayed availability :-(. (No ETA available yet on when they will be available). Initial EQS will not have this option available. Your dealer can remove them from your configuration if you want an EQS before resolution of the issue.

Automatic Comfort Doors (Option P24) is the feature that allows doors to automatically open/close (i.e. open when you approach the car or close when you press the brake pedal). They are normally included in the Exclusive and Pinnacle trims.

So that means the edition 1 won't be the first cars. Because all Edition 1 are either Exclusive or Pinnacle.

Typical Mercedes. I bet this is due to the issues with the door behaving unpredictably as shown in the Autogefuehl video. I don't know why they can't just deliver the Exclusive and Pinnacle cars while they tune the software, and then enable the feature later.

Watch this at 16:12.

It did not behave unpredictably, watch his feet, he stepped on the brake. The only argument that could be made here is that maybe it should require more pressure on the brake pedal because you can see that he just barely clipped it as he was putting his left foot in.

While having automatic doors may be fun at first I do wonder how practical such a feature would really be in real world use. For example, suppose you’re in a parking lot and someone parks close enough to your car that the automatic door swings open and hits their car. Hopefully all that has been worked out but maybe that’s part of the problem as well. As for the video above, I wondered if maybe he inadvertently made a hand gesture that signaled the door to close. The promotional video shows the male driver waving his left hand to close his door. That may have been the idea early on and they have since abandoned that approach and went with pressing the brake pedal to close the door, at least for the driver. I’m not sure what the approach would be for the other three doors to close it other than to give it a tug.

For the other doors you can have a button. That's what Rolls Royce does. For rear passengers, Mercedes could have that button on the back of the front seats, or by the rear HVAC controls or on the B-pillar. For the front passenger it can be on the center console.

This is what I was getting at. Fine-tuning the calibration of the triggers and the sensors should not be a reason to delay the product.

Who knows why its delayed, could maybe be a result of the chip shortage for all we know. Better Mercedes work out the kinks than release it prematurely, we've all seen the GLE forums afterall.

Looks like the trim nomenclature will follow through to other models as MB US announced the W206 C-Class packaging structure today with these very same trims.

Personally I would have to first test the Automatic Comfort Doors before I would buy an EQS (more likely an EQS SUV) with this option. Opening and closing doors on a S Class is not a big deal. They would be fun to showoff to your family and friends for sure. Reliable for the long-haul, time will tell. The jumping GLE and GLS suspension trick has proven to be more of a gimmick and will be very costly if and when the components begins to wear out or fail.
