Charging stations

Has anyone heard from MB what their plans for recharging stations are for potential customers for EQS who don't live in a megalopolis? Hmmm? Will the car's port accept any charging cable? I've read that many of these stations abysmal in performance and location.

Mercedes is not developing it's own charger network. You will have to use compatible charging networks. Here are two that I have signed up with to charge my Porsche.

https://www.electrifyamerica.com

https://www.chargepoint.com/

What I can tell you is that while I setup accounts with both of these about 14 months ago, I have never used them. The only third party charger I plugged into is at whole foods, mainly to enjoy the prime parking spots. Generally the best charger is the one you have at home, unless you are on a road trip (for which a petrol engined car is better).

The EQS uses standard cables for all non-Tesla EVs, and you can get adapters too.

No, The other way around. Tesla’s can be charged at any station with aftermarket adapters but you cannot use Tesla stations if you are not driving a Tesla.

Ford will only be able to produce 50% of cars and trucks needed for quarter 2 because of a computer chip shortage. Doubt any other car maker is ahead of that game either.

There are common in home chargers already available. Just look on Amazon and type in “EV Chargers”. Most use 110 volt/30 amp or 220 volt/50 amp breakers from your in home electric panel. 110v systems are very slow.

Any info on whether navigation system will let you know where nearest charging station is and if it will give you a warning when the times comes as to the need to recharge the vehicle. I believe Tesla vehicles do this now.

Yes, One of the multiple online films of the EQS stated maps to charging stations, miles to nearest stations and miles until charge depletion. I assume this will be on even low end EV’s eventually as a standard feature.

Yes, the launch videos demonstrate the Nav system pointing out the nearest charging locations along your route. There are several videos of the pre-launch EQS using this feature.

Thanks for the info JoeMa. I thought they did, but I was at my dealer today putting in a preorder and he was stating how little information Mercedes is giving them about the car and what their future plans are for charging stations, as they say they will be all electric by 2025. That's going to put a big demand on chargers and would be nice if Mercedes did something along the lines of Tesla and their superchargers, but I realize now is not an optimal time for Mercedes to invest in that infrastructure.

Mercedes will most likely partner with an established charging company like they did with Ionity EU. Look for MB to partner with EVGo or a similar charging company here in the US. This is one area where Tesla offers a big advantage over the competition but that will change in time as more and more dollars are invested in charging stations. The key will be DC fast charging of 150kW to 350kW. MB states the EQS can be charged from 10 to 100% in 31 minutes with DC fast charging at 200kW.

I'm picking up my Tesla tomorrow. That will be my first BEV. My Porsche which I sold last month was a PHEV which actually got me excited about the possibility of a BEV. I didn't get the performance model of the Tesla because I didn't want it to out perform the EQS which will be more than twice the price.

Now question is whether to in install a Tesla charger or a JuiceBox. I think I will just use the free charger that comes with the car combined with a NEMA 14-50 adapter. But when we move into our new house in the fall, I think I will install all JuiceBox units so I can charge any car brand. Doesn't make sense to install a proprietary charger.

I hope Mercedes with OTA the charging MAPs since they will be obsolete as soon as they make them.
I just read earlier today that Cumberland farms will be adding charging stations to 250 of it's stores. even better they will be 500KVA stations with DC charging.
Cumberland Farms is a convenience store in the New England area. They added gas stations so folks would have a reason to use their stores.
Logic follows charging will serve the same purpose.

Congrats on the Tesla. My nephew just recently bought a Model Y and he loves it. He was able to get the $10k autopilot for free. Its one of the reasons i got interested in the EQS. He put a Tesla charger in his garage as that will be the only electric car in that household for quite a while. I just put a deposit down for a EQS 580 today. I don't expect delivery till the end of the year, if that. Although the dealer did say Mercedes plans on starting production sometime in July and delivery to the states in September. I actually saw the Mercedes bulletin so he wasn't bs ing me. I'm 6th on the list for an EQS and all are 580's. Any word on when you may expect delivery, although reading the new S class forum, it could be anytime in the next year, lol.

I saw you got the matte gray just like me. Good choice. I think it will look great with the Macchiato interior. I went with the Neva grey. Similar color scheme to the 2014 BMW M5 in my signature.

Hi Stealth-Pilot,

I’ve owned EVs for 10ys now and have the following suggestions for you…

1) Do go for a vendor-neutral EVSE (charger). You will likely change cars regularly and don’t want to be hostage to a specific charging tech (I.e. Tesla). All Teslas come with an adapter to J1772.
2) Pay to get oversized wires from your breaker to the EVSE (go for wires that support 100A current). This will allow you to upgrade to faster chargers over time.
3) Ideally get an EVSE that provides 80A. Over time EVs will support faster charge rates and you’ll love the convenience.

Looking forward to my 7th EV… EQS580!

Regards

Thanks some great advice. One more question - is there a way to charge below the maximum speed? I read that fast charging can cause faster battery degradation.

Great Question…

Answer is YES.

Once you connect your EV to an EVSE, the car advises the EVSE of its maximum supported power rating. The EVSE will then adjust the current it supplies accordingly.

You are correct that charging at very high power rating (like Tesla Super Charger and L3 CCS) will deteriorate the battery if done too frequently, however that really only applies to very high charge rates (100KWH and above). Level 2 Chargers that we use at home will not exceed 19.2KWH (80A * 240VAC) so you don’t need to worry about battery degradation at home.

On note about the EQS, in the US the EQS will only support 9.6KWH (disappointing) so the max current it will draw from the EVSE is 40Amp (@240VAC)

BTW be prepared for sticker shock at the cost of wiring, Copper is at an all time high.
If you are going any distance from your breaker box, figure at least $20/ft for 50 Amp/240VAC service.
sadly i'll need about 50ft.

Luckily for me my breaker box is in the middle of my garage so that I could install the charger port right next to the breaker box.

The EQS will be one of the most expensive EV's available (I'm guessing $115K - $140K) so owners can easily afford the cost of a charging box install, regardless of the cost of wiring. Which brings me to the point, buying an EQS will in no way be saving you money. It will in fact cost many buyers more money than a gas engine equivalent. But it will start to change the way we view cars and the fuels needed to move them. EV's are the future of automobiles, no avoiding it.

Are you saying that you believe the EQS580 has a higher TCO over 2-3 years than a S580?
