Check out the Out of Spec review here, about 35 min into the video. He takes of the hands at 34:47, alert comes up on the dashboard at 35:02. After a while it also starts to beep.

Yes, of course it's 15 seconds. I didn't bother to add the seconds. Is it possible that it's for the EQS 450 only that it last 15 seconds and the EQS 580 lasts longer? I doubt it but I thought I would ask.

23 EQS 580 SUV, 19 X7 (sold), 17/14 GLS550 (sold) 13 GL550 (sold)
Our X7 has heat sensors under the leather of the steering wheel to determine if your hands are on the wheel. I can rest my arm on my leg and then lightly touch a few fingers on the back side of the steering wheel and the X7 will continue auto-steering indefinitely. Is this possible in the EQS?

2022 Mercedes EQS 580
This is a lot better than Tesla which uses torque on the steering wheel as an indication that you are holding it. So if you hold the wheel steady with both hands the Tesla might think you don't have your hand on the wheel. If you rest one arm on one spoke of the wheel then the weight pushing it down on that one side will make the car think you are holding the wheel. It's a dumb system and you can trick it by placing a magnetic weight on one spoke (i have one I use on dense traffic situations).

This makes me feel a lot better about the auto pilot on the EQS even though it only lasts for 15 seconds. But just by touching the steering wheel with a finger for a split second, it resets from what I now understand you are saying. Does it drive by itself indefinitely if you have a finger resting on the wheel on an Interstate? Also, from what I read it is much improved over my current 2019 S450 for city stop and go driving. Is that the case? The S450 does not do very well at all in that scenario. On most roads, it does not work at all.

2022 EQS 450+
@BeanTrader I can't really say because I haven't driven an S-Class in years. I can only say that it is servicable and definitely a step in the right direction, however not nearly as confidence inspiring as the Tesla.

I found the following story on level 2 and lever 3 autonomous driving quite interesting.

The capabilities of the mercedes self driving system have not changed since 2017. Nothing has changed from the "users" perspective since my E43. It's also identical to my 21 GLS 580. In fact, my 580 beeps much earlier and more often than my 43. Whatever improvements that may have occurred in those 5 years are either "locked up in the system" or are mostly unnoticeable. My E43 can be driven hands-free for quite a long time. The system might briefly alert and reset itself without touching the wheel at all. On the 21 GlS it requires more attention. Anyone driving any of these systems without keeping their hands on the wheel is an idiot since they are susceptible to road markers and are affected by shadows or direct sunlight in an impredictable fashion. As quite a number of brainless, dead Tesla owners can attest to, they are very far from self-driving.

I agree, but why would Mercedes cut the time to only 15 seconds from 60 without touching the wheel on the Interstate? As long as the driver is ready to respond in case the car veers off the lane I don't understand downgrading the system. I find that on long trips, I don't get as fatigued with the current system on my 2019 S450.

My 580 had an issue today in the office garage. Hyperscreen wouldn't turn on (and neither would the passenger screen). The driver screen was functional and error messages popped up saying that pretty much anything with a sensor was not functional work--lane assist, traffic sign assist, heads up display, braking assist, etc. I turned the car off and on and had the same issue. Called MB on the way home and was told that it was a known problem with the 22's when cars reach around 30k miles (mine has 1600 miles, so we're a bit early on this....). They said that the car would need a few new semiconductor chips and a software update. So I called the nearest dealer, who said that the soonest they could get me in was in four weeks.
On a lark, I checked the car a few minutes ago (after it was sitting at home for over an hour) and the screens all booted up fine. Curious as to whether this will happen again and if there is a way to just reboot the car without having to go to the dealer..

I heard it actually has to do with tire pressures so check that. https://mbworld.org/forums/s-class-w...ml#post8710149

Great read.
I also have a benz with hyperscreen, but can't figure out how the passenger screen can view video (e.g., Youtube) while moving. The broser is locked out when the passenger tries "must be in P to display".
Any luck getting streaming on the passenger screen while driving?

I think you need the zync app, which hasn’t been released/enabled yet. The recent dealership only software upgrade (not OTA) is supposed to prepare the car for this.
