Apple CarPlay and integrated nav at the same time
Does anyone know if it’s possible to use Apple CarPlay with for example Waze active on the center display while at the same time using the car’s built-in navigation system and have it displayed on the drivers display so that you know where to stop and charge, have the battery pre-conditions on a roadtrip? Or is it like Audi where it’s one of the other, they don’t really co-exist?

From what I saw in Alex on Autos.... No. It doesnt seem you can run 2 separate carplays at the same time.Personally I dont see the need since the MBUX interface is better than carplay. The most important thing for the EQS, integrated nav with charging station options and road guidance is built in, so is access to all your media files.

Thanks but my question wasn't whether you can run two CarPlay sessions at the same time. It was whether you can run the car's built-in navigation and have it shown on the driver's display for the reasons you mention (charging planning etc) while having Waze on the center display as I like to have that running on roadtrips to see police warnings.

You can have two different navigation maps running from separate devices at the same time (Carplay on infotainment and MB Nav on Gauges for example), however you cannot have two separate turn by turn directions on at the same time. Once you start one either through CarPlay or MBUX, it cancels the other. But say if you want turn by turn from MB nav and waze to run in the background (no route set) it can do that.

So far every car I've encountered does not allow simultaneous route guidance from the built-in nav and CarPlay, which kinda makes sense. They would talk over each other giving you potentially conflicting turn instructions, so if you start route guidance in one, it cancels it in the other one. It's like that in my current AMG, and it's been like that in other cars I've tried. I haven't tried it in a BMW, so I'm curious if you really can have concurrent route guidance and how does that work with the turn-by-turn instructions talking over each other? However, in most cars you can have active route guidance with CarPlay and still view the map of the in-built navigation and vice versa. Audi is one exception to this, which when you start navigation in CarPlay it only shows a compass in the instrument cluster. You can't show the built-in map in the instrument cluster while CarPlay navigation is active, but I can do that in my AMG. I expect it works the same way in the EQS. Only one of the systems can actively do route guidance, while the other one can still show the map. So you could have Waze open in the center display to see police warnings etc. while the MB navigation is giving you route guidance. I've done this in the past, and Waze was even announcing alerts on the current road w/o actually having Waze do the route guidance. I stopped using Waze a long time ago, though. It has gotten buggy, and the police warnings are largely useless at least around here. They show mostly where the cops used to be. My radar detector with updatable firmware is much more reliable. Waze has also given me some terrible route guidance and gotten me stuck in city traffic when the highway would have been a better route.

So to be clear, in our X7 I can enter a destination using BMW's NAV with turn-by-turn and still have Waze running in the background on CarPlay. Waze will still alert me as needed from the background. But if I do a route using Apple Maps with turn-by-turn, Waze cannot be running in the background.

If you mean that's how it works for you in your 2020 S560, I'm not surprised. MB was a little late to the game with regard to CarPlay integration, only recently supporting Wireless CarPlay. But as I said, BMW's NAV on top with Waze in the background works on our BMW X7 and I do get notifications. BMW has been leading most other manufacturers when it comes to Apple CarPlay integration. We've had turn-by-turn Apple Maps integration and HUD support for Apple Maps soon after Apple opened it up to car manufacturers in CarPlay.

I went to pick up dinner and tested this in our X7 and it works as you describe. I did a route with Apple Maps and then started Waze on the center screen and both worked at the same time. I could switch back and forth between Apple Maps and Waze on the center screen while turn-by-turn directions and audible messages from Apple Maps continue without interruption. As I said, BMW is ahead of the curve with CarPlay.

Not all cars support multi-screen or HUD. I can’t recall but believe our Comand in the E63s didn’t support CarPlay in the HUD.
Overall Mercedes has been pretty far behind in that area. Implementation in Comand is lackluster and took a step back in MBUX. MBUX 2 now seems to be where it should have been visually and in function, provided it handles it in the way the OP was asking for.
Sadly they are also far behind on digital keys.

This is a different scenario from what OP was asking, but also this has nothing to do with the car. This works with Mercedes as well. I've done this in the past. Use Google Maps in the foreground and Waze was continuing to announce alerts in the background. However, this only works for a while. iOS doesn't allow apps to actually run in the background continuously, but they can install triggers that wake up the app briefly. Such triggers can be based on locations (geo fences) for example. What Waze does is that it registers such triggers for alerts that it knows within a certain radius while you have it in the foreground, and then when you put Waze in the background, this triggers/geo fences are still active, however, Waze will not register new triggers for new alerts, and once you drive out of the initial radius there will be no alerts anymore. This happens on a longer road trip. You'll get alerts initially, but eventually Waze will go quiet.
I set the Waze audio for Alerts only.

I discovered that Apple Maps directions show up on the HUD, but Google Maps directions don't. I haven't tried adding the car Nav on top yet to see which takes priority.

Digital key would be nice. Other than the car key fob, I don't carry keys anymore to get into my house and other places. However, the digital car keys (those on smartphones as the key fob itself is technically a digital key as well) in their current forms are not really a fob replacement. They don't do everything a fob does. Most of them use NFC, so you have to take your phone out and hold it against the door handle and place it in the dedicated spot to start the car. Also means you can't open the trunk with a kick if you have your hands full, so not really the same convenience as the key fob which only has to be on the person. Some manufacturers use Bluetooth LE, so they work on proximity like the key fob and you don't have to take out the phone. Apple CarKey also supports UWB (Ultra-wideband) on the iPhone 11 and up, which does the same if supported in the car. Looks like the Germans are only willing to support NFC, though. I don't mind carrying my car key fob as it pretty much just stays in my pocket and I leave it at home if I'm not driving anywhere. I still have to carry a wallet for my driver license, too, so we aren't quite at the point where the phone does everything w/o compromising. This stuff needs to mature a bit more.

P.S. Lincoln I believe uses Bluetooth as well, but they have a hidden keypad in the door frame to unlock the car and a second code to start the engine.

The Ford/Lincoln keypad is severely underrated. They were awesome when I use to rent Explorers and Expeditions to take the family to the beach.
