It seems like the solution is at hand, finally! My suspicion seems confirmed!

I am scheduled to have this software update on July 11. I’m not sure if this is one of the issues, but my car fairly frequently decelerates suddenly because it wrongly determines that the speed limit is 40 mph instead of 70 for example. I’ve also sent display 80 mph instead of 35 or 40. I’ve become accustomed to this and I very quickly adjust it to the proper speed. So my question is this: is this one of the problems this update will fix?

Check your safety assistance settings. The adaptive cruise has a setting to automatically adjust to the speed limit and could be incorrectly reading ramp/exit limits at the speed limit and thus adjusting to that.

Exactly. That's why I keep it off. The speed limit is determined by recognizing the posted sign or by the nav system database. It reads the signs just fine, but the database has too many mistakes to be useful. Having the vehicle self set out of the blue while driving at 70 mph is a major PITA, and, it can be dangerous too.

I don’t think this has anything to do with ramp/exit speed limits. It all of a sudden drops the speed on the highway with no exits nearby.

Agreed that the described behaviour is unlikely from the speed limit assist but SLA can actually cause a change in speed on a highway with no exits nearby. One reason is the speed limit data on navigation database. I've faced the opposite behaviour, speed increasing instead of decreasing. This happened on a high way with a temporary reduced speed limit (indicated by adaptive traffic signs). A stupid thing but the speed limit data on the road had been mapped to sections that do not align with exits (could be city border). The car ignores the latest speed limit sign observed with the camera and restores the (higher) speed from the database. Another stupid thing to increase speed over the one detected by the camera.

Another scenario we have is trucks with speed limit signs at the rear of the vehicle. Usually the car ignores those but not always.

Just telling the car can change speed between exits.

Again, speed limit assist also uses speed limits that are in the nav database. If the database is wrong, you end up slowing down for what is in effect, nothing at all. Simply turn that part of the system off and problem solved.
In addition another issue with the system is that on occasion it will ghost when passing large trucks. In that case what you will feel is a brake tap and a light tug away from the truck. Other nanny issues that crop up occasionally is slamming of the brakes when in reverse, another ghost. These IMO are minor rare foibles, that I would rather endure than actually running over someone or getting hit reversing or maneuvering into a blind spot.

EQS 580
With respect to the sudden jerking of the car upon startup, I think the ESP recall software fixed it. Last Thursday it was installed along with another ADAS system update. My EQS has not jerked and seems more composed on the highway. I will report back if I get the jerk again.

Wonderful, glad to hear it did.

tesla model x / MB S580
I was also informed about the recall for the ESP software and am getting it done on Monday 3rd. After the ADAS only update there were still the little jerks at 25mph or so. I suspect the latest fix will help with that, and I have also seen the complete system failure of ESP etc. WHILE DRIVING - so this will be really welcomed. (Although I had not seen that failure since the ADAS update, I had seen a situation where it said Traffic sign recognition inactive” for no reason one day.

On another note - I already had the ADAS updated a couple of weeks ago and that was a dramatic improvement on the Highway. Significantly closer (although still not as confident) to Tesla levels of performance. I will say that while the Mercedes system in its latest incarnation may not be as confident as the Tesla in overall steering performance, I actually prefer the overall implementation. Especially as you can take steering control and hand it back without needing to re-activate the system.

EQS 580
I had my EQS in several weeks ago because the adaptive cruise control would drop even while the steering assist would stay active. The dealer updated the ADAS system which corrected my problem. While I was at the dealer for another problem, they updated my ADAS system again. Also, they updated my ESP system. That stopped the little jerk at 25mph.

Anyone have further developments on this? I have a '23 EQS 450+ with no recall notifications, and I am getting the jerk right around 25 mph. Just started about a week ago, even though I have had the car for two months. It was a retired service loaner.

Not sure it's worth my time to bring it in, since I doubt they will be able to duplicate -- It doesn't happen every time I turn the car on, and there's no real way to trigger it with any certainty.

Is there a way to request an ESP/ADAS update otherwise? I've had a few OTA updates, but nothing that seems substantive.

The last update I got at the dealer cured it completely. I have a 22 580. Im sorry but I dont have specifics on the update. I was just informed before my scheduled maintenance that I would need additional recall updates that will take days to do. I think MB is making a major software reprogramming to cover the previous "patches" so as to consolidate all vehicles to a single baseline build. As anyone with anything to software Im well aware that patches on patches lead to the software acting up.
