Exactly. With an EV, calculating the extra energy required to change altitude is straightforward. I have done this exact calculation to see the additional power required to get to our house in the mountains. Surprisingly F=ma works. When using the GPS guidance in the car, it comes very close to accurately estimating the battery state at the arrival location - taking into account the change in altitude.

If I try really hard, I think I can understand this. I had long suspected that it was the elevation change, because I continually got significantly better numbers coming home than going, and the traffic, use of strong regen, speed all were variables whioh sometimes seemed to equal out in my mind. It is fantastic to talk to someone who actually can quantify what I had hypothesized.....ignorant mathematically as I am! That has significant ramificatkons for my potential drive to DFW from San Antonio.....and back. Thanks for explaining this! I love learning more about this car!

What surprises me is that you have a 900 ft elevation gain between your house and the golf course in Texas no less.

Almost, These pictures are a bit East and South East in Big Bend National Park and Guadalupe State Park. I don’t know where the golf course talked about is but here is the oddest one in Texas in the Chihuahuan Desert at Lajitas, Texas.

Pretty scenery. Did camp in Big Bend as a kid in the 60's spent the whole time in the tent during a downpour. Crossed the border in el Paso and got a cool Mexican sombrero. Interviewed with TI in '79.

But to your point I have probably lived in Ohio far too long. I fact I know I have...

Yea, I get that a lot. The Texas Hill Country begins just Northwest of San Antonio, and that is where the golf course is. I've seen my altimeter climb to 6000ft entering Chisos Basin in Big Bend (one of those fantastic pics) Remember Lance Armstrong trained and lived in Austin. Try riding a bike from Medina to Leakey......then tell me about the Texas hills! Anyway, thanks for the analysis.

Haven't played it, but I did feed a beer to the goat (Mayor of Lajitas), before he died of cirrhosis.

My wife and I returned to Des Moines from Copley, OH Tuesday evening. It was MUCH warmer 40s and 50s on the return trip than it was getting there ((started at 8 degrees in IA and teens to mid 20s from IL to northeast OH). We made 4 stops getting there and 3 stops for charging on the return. There were at least two EA chargers out of order at every stop. That’s unacceptable. Hopefully, this problem will be greatly rectified this year either the infrastructure bill.

Speaking of chargers, I just watched a news story on CNBC about Mercedes. They are also partnering with ChagePoint, MN8 (not idea what this is). There was no mention of EA but that could have been an oversight. They will build their own charging stations to compete with Tesla. The story also stated that Mercedes plans to sell many EV’s in the next few years.

I forgot to mention that the only real problem on the trip was that the brand new transponder was not working on most toll booths. Very aggravating. A friend mentioned to me yesterday that all he does is store his transponder in the console and as he approaches the booth he holds it at the center of the windshield on driver’s side and it works every time. It may be that his car’s windshield doesn’t have all the tech that the EQS with the winter package has.

I have problems with the garage door opener. I have my ez pass transponder over the “hole” in the windshield and it works fine. Every once in a while the built in door opener fails to work so I use the remote from the opener. It doesn’t work inside the car even if I place it right next to the hole but as soon as I open up and hang it outside the window and push the button the door opens first time every time.

Does your EQS have the heated windshield? I’m just wondering if this is why the transponder doesn’t work for me even though I attach it at that rectangle to the right of the rear view mirror.

I have no problem at all with the garage door opener.

See the thread here on transponder placement. It was really frustrating for me as nothting worked, but I found a solution.

https://mbworld.org/forums/eqs/85322...placement.html

The one spot I didn't try was the small side window on the driver's side. I have a work gate transonder there and it works fine.

I do not have the heated windshield but I did get the laminated glass with thermal and noise insulation. I’ll push the remote 10 times while inside the car and nothing but as soon as I open the window and barely place it outside it works first click everytime. For some reason the built in opener has been working much more consistently.
My transponder is also place in the rectangle to the right of the mirror. I have to admit I’m not positive it works because the toll I use now is automatic toll by plate if it doesn’t sense a transponder. I’ve only had the car just over 3 weeks so I think it’s too soon to get a letter in the mail if it didn’t work.

I got mixed up between the built in garage door opener and the transponder. I use the built in opener and it works perfectly every time.
