Can someone please tell me what this is?

Rear seat arm rest EQS 580; not a complete folddown that gives access to the trunk, just the armrest down. The manual does not seem to address this position.

You press in on it once and it is a “pen” holder. Your press in on it a second time it is a cup holder.

Yep, just checked...it's that second push that got me. Thanks. But a pen holder, really? just what I need for the kids in the back seat with white leather seats.

Another odd ball idea by German Engineers. I also feel the rear cup holders are not robust enough and kind of cheaply made for such a expensive vehicle. Years ago I asked a German friend why many of their brands considered cup holders as a after thought. He replied that only Americans have drive through food, eat and drink in their cars and in most countries cars are such luxury items most folks would never use them as a “lunch counter”. I do not know how true his observation was at the time.

I wonder if MB officially calls that space as ''pen holder''.
If so, it is unlikely designed to hold a ball pen or fountain pen but rather to hold a stylus pen for the rear seat tablet and the entertainment monitors.
Or, it might be called a ''straw holder'' due to its proximity to the cup holders.

Well, One can use it for whatever fits. You are probably correct in that a computer stylus pen would be used more these days. I need to look tomorrow but I remember a similar space at the rear of the center console also.

My very own real-time explanatory video about the rear arm rest mystery pocket . Dont feel bad it has stumped many an internet "auto expert". The same ones that spend half their review complaining about the EQS weird self moving brake and don't even know that the brake only moves in one pedal drive or auto. There are 2 others, including the default normal, where the pedal does not move at all! The big issue is that the EQS has so many features and options that many "regular folk" find it difficult to use.

Isn't that observation true still today, not only "at the time"? I've seen some change of opinions towards accepting cup holders if the driver wants to drink during a long trip. Does not happen in my car.

When I first encountered this "pen holder" in a showroom, my mind was wanting it to be a smartphone charging dock -- or at least a dock/holder. But, it's not quite the right dimension for this. I think it would have been easy to do, from an engineering perspective.

I think the first position on the rear armrest is a place to put a cell phone. I am not sure why anyone would want to do that. This cup holder setup in the rear armrest is also in the new S class.

That is what it says in the manual that its for a cell phone, mine would not fit because of the case.

My cell phone will not fit in the back arm wrest either. I also wonder what this small space at the rear of the center console does. Too small for just about anything. Change holder?

It is a smart phone holder that allows the phone to sit upright and at an angle in landscape mode so you can watch a movie/video.

But, if so, a backseat viewer would have to be a contortionist to see it.

None of the 4 phones in my family fit in the rear center console slot. Also tried a stylus pen in the slot and once you get it in under the two ears you cannot get it back out without sticking something like a screwdriver in from below and pushing the pen back out. In my case this slot is useless…..

Having never been in the back seat of my 450+, I thought I should take a look to see if I have cup holders and a “pen slot.”

Lo, and behold! Sure enough, I do! Good to know!!

Thanks for the very helpful video!!

Ooops, sorry. Up to now the posts have been about a back seat feature in the EQS sedans. Didn't realize you had slipped an SUV post into the EQS topic.

Never seen the SUV.

Well, from your photo I don’t recognize that area in my EQS450 at all.
Are you showing the front or rear of the front seat center console?

In all the posts above it says “rear” of the front console.
