New smart home integration

Looks like Hey Mercedes is updated with some new integrations. I got an email from myQ today and I can ask hey Mercedes to open my garage door. Would be cool if they integrated it more to mbux so the car shows the button as you get close to home.

If you're like me and forget if you close the garage door or not after driving halfway down the street, the best part of this integration is asking MBUX the status of your garage door and then telling it to close.

Or you could set up an automation that automatically closes it when you leave a geofence around your house or if it's left open for a certain amount of time. The point of a smart home is that it does routine tasks for you w/o you having to interact with it directly, utilizing sensors to know whether you are at home or away and then make sure the house is secure at all times.

I have it set to auto close after 10min so I've never looked into automation. Are you using any automation apps? I looked at IFTTT 7-8 years ago but I didn't find it that reliable, nor easy to use. I'm sure things have improved since then.

I do. I use Apple Homekit and have several automations and scenes set up. I also experimented with Home Assistant, which is quite powerful. Somebody wrote a custom component to integrate with Mercedes me connect, so you can use the car's location to trigger automations. For a while I had my garage open automatically as I pulled up to my house. It wasn't perfect, because the car only reports its location periodically, so sometimes it didn't open the garage door until I was already in front of it. I could have increased the radius of the geofence to increase the chance it would open in time, but eventually realized that I don't really want my garage to open until I have line of sight.

It would work great when leaving, though, as it doesn't have to be as precise. It just needs to close once you are far enough away from the house. Unfortunately, with the shortages on Raspberry Pis I put Home Assistant on the shelf for now. I didn't wanna install it on the same one I use for Homebridge. I may go back to it once the Raspberry Pi supplies are back to more normal levels. Haven't actually checked recently. On the other hand I don't forget to close my garage door these days and I'm never in doubt anymore, because it's one tap on my phone now to close the garage, lock all the doors and arm the alarm system all at once, and I get a notification on my phone and Fitbit to confirm, so I know that I closed it plus I also have it set up to close automatically after 10 minutes just in case. In addition since iOS 16 there's a lock screen widget that shows the status of my house, so a quick glance at my phone tells me right away if a door is open or unlocked or the alarm system is disarmed. I have played with IFTTT as well, but it didn't convince me.

Getting Hey Mercedes to help set up the myQ to work with the car was very easy. Only took a minute, since I already had a myQ account. I commanded "open my garage door" and it worked first time. The issue I have is that it opens both of my garage doors. Anybody have a solution?

Normally this works by giving them unique names and then use the name in the command. For example name one Left Garage and the other one Right Garage and then say Hey Mercedes open the left garage. Not sure if MB accounted for this, but that's how Apple Homekit does it if you have multiple garages.

I integrated Smartthings as well and ran in to this issue since my garage door was mirrored there as well. Unfortunately, the integration is fairly basic at this point and fact that it is only through voice makes it worse.

I hope they continue updating MBux to make integration much better. I would love to have a button on the center console when I get close to home.

why button on the mbux when there is already a button on the mirror. I’d like geo fence option later if possible. It’s nice to be able to check the status of the garage door by asking from anywhere not just from near home.

The whole thing is effectively redundant and I think MB should have used the time and money to fix all the other issues they have with the software in recent models. As I stated on another thread, why would you use this over just pressing the Homelink button on the mirror? Going through myQ isn't any more convenient. You also have to factor in that the Internet connection at your house could be down, so the garage door may not open/close and you have to use Homelink as a backup. The myQ cloud is also down sometimes, so again it may not work when you need it. Homelink always works as it doesn't rely on an Internet connection or cloud services. I like having myQ for when I'm not in my car and I often leave the house on foot through the garage and come back in through the garage, so being able to open/close it from my phone is convenient, but when I'm in my car it doesn't really do anything that Homelink doesn't already do, except for checking the garage door status remotely, but as I've said there are more effective ways to ensure the garage is closed such as automations or geo fencing and have the garage close automatically if you forget. Again, assuming there isn't an outage right then and there.

Hey at least we still have physical homelink buttons. Porsche Cayenne MY24 has them removed and you have to access them thru the main screen. It's really annoying when you're backing out and the screen is filled with backup cameras with no way to close the garage unless you put it in park.

Coming home they will pop onto the screen based on geofence.

Same with Audi. You should be able to swipe down from the top of the screen when the backup camera is up to reveal the Homelink button.

I have two garage doors linked to my MyQ account, and whenever I use the "Hey Mercedes" command, both doors open or close simultaneously. Has anyone successfully managed to control each door independently?

Did you assign each garage door a unique name in the MyQ app and do you reference the specific name when asking MBUX?

Yes they do and each time I tried using these names, Hey Mercedes did not recognize the names. In fact, my expectation was that when I say, "Open the garage door," the car would prompt me to specify which one to open, considering that there are two doors with different names connected to the account. It appears that MyQ does not allow the car to see the devices associated with the account.

Slightly off topic: One of the 2 important features that I miss, after owning a Tesla Model S for more than 5 years, was the garage door opening automatically when I was within 25 feet. It worked flawlessly.

The myQ API does enumerate each individual device and they can be controlled individually, but most likely MB's integration didn't account for that and doesn't deal with multiple garage doors and instead just sends a command to open/close them all. As I said, what they have done here is mediocre at best.
