First service in 2 years. Is software update required at dealership?

I took my EQS450 for the first time for 2 year service - Type A.
I thought it would be simple break fluid change and air filter change.
however service person called back and said the car needs software updates and car needs to be there for 2 days.

has anyone experienced this?

A full SW update takes a long time, several hours but not two days. I would recommend a full update, even if the workshop did not manage to do it in a day.

I hit the 20K mile mark after 10 months. Five modules received updated software while the car was in the shop for the complimentary service. The car was tied up for a day or two.

Yes, but the update was done in a morning. They must have a backup of people needing the service.

Hah, they took over a month for my "software update"...which I was OK with since they gave me a 580 and that was a month I just put miles on their car. But, I work in enterprise storage. I don't care how large the storage capacity is on the car, or what their network connection is to their dealership...there is no update in the world that should take 2+days (let alone weeks), unless there's incompetence involved which sadly I think speaks to a ton of Mercedes dealerships and their EV offerings

Unlike a Tesla or modern ground up EV, traditional cars including Mercedes have hundreds of ECUs, each of them could require separate updates.
So it is actually not surprising that updates can take very long depending how many needs to be updated (and verified and tested) and how automatic is the process.
Mercedes is moving to modernize their architecture in future generations.

My SA told me updates can take hours to do, and often they have to start over when a quirk happens along the way. Two days seems plausible. A month...not so much.

Yes. My 2023 sat on the showroom floor for over a year before I purchased in March. Recent software glitch with my instrument panel rebooting on its own required a service visit to diagnose the problem. Car was in dealership for two days for “the most updates she’s ever seen” as commented by my SA. Car back and seems to be much much smoother on all fronts. Good luck. They are computers on wheels she said, rarely having mechanical issues.
