Stop-and-go

Hi everyone,

I have an EQS 450+ from December 2023, European version. I’m experiencing an issue with the stop-and-go system.

Sometimes, though rarely, when I’m in a traffic jam, the stop-and-go feature works perfectly: the car stops and then restarts without any problems. However, most of the time, when traffic starts moving again, my car remains completely stationary, and I have to slightly press the accelerator to get it moving again.

Is there any way for the car to always continue driving automatically, even after being stopped for more than a few seconds? Could this be an issue with my configuration settings?

Yesterday, during one trip, it worked, and I felt like it would have continued functioning even if I had been stopped at a traffic light for longer than the typical interval in a traffic jam. However, on my return trip, it didn’t reactivate after even short pauses, unlike earlier in the day.

Since I’ve had the car (July), it’s only worked properly twice, and I can’t figure out what the common factor was.

Thanks for any advice!

This is one of my biggest gripes with EQ vehicle, Adaptive cruise times out after 15 seconds on stationary traffic. This is a dumb limitation, but that’s why it’s happening.

In some circumstances it times out after only 2 seconds. I would have to read the manual again to remember when it will timeout after only 2 secs but the visual indication that it has timed out is when the system stops flashing.

Today, I discovered that if I’m in a traffic jam on a three-lane street and I position myself in the center lane, the system works perfectly and waits the full 60 seconds, as mentioned in the manual, before the automatic start-stop function stops working. However, if I’m in the left or right lane, it deactivates after just two seconds.

Also, today I started noticing another issue: the automatic lane change (initiated by me, since I don’t have the update for it to work automatically) stops working, and I have to toggle the option on and off for it to function again for a short while.

Out of curiosity, why does it timeout like that? There has to be a reason right?

I don't know exactly how the latest implementation works and what changes they made, but there are different timeouts depending on the road you are on. On a multilane, separated highway you get the longest timeout. Used to be 30 seconds, but now I think they increased it to 60 seconds. The green car icon in the instrument cluster should be blinking slowly in this case. As long as it's blinking, the car will start automatically if the traffic resumes. On surface and other streets where there's a possibility for pedestrians, cyclists etc. the timeout is much shorter. It's for safety reasons, so that the car doesn't start automatically at a traffic light and run over a pedestrian that is crossing last minute. The system gets the information from the navigation map, so depending on the road you are on, the timeout will be different. Frankly, DISTRONIC is more meant for highway driving. I rarely use it on surface streets, and thankfully I get to avoid driving in the daily commuter mess.

Thank you, does the timeout apply to ICE vehicles too?

Yes, it works as I described in my 2019 C63. I get 30 seconds on highways and 3 seconds on surface streets. It has to be equipped with the navigation system, though. W/o it you get 3 seconds everywhere.

BTW, you can also extend it by pressing RES while still stopped. Once it times out and the green car icon stops blinking press RES and then you get another 30 or however long the timeout is.
