I think this has been covered before, but there seems to be some conflicting information so I'm wondering if there is a general consensus these days. I just took the EQS 580 Sedan in for service B ($1lk!) and looks like I need new tires. For the quietest ride, they are recommending what others here have also recommended.

They told me they are having a sale and can beat Discount Tire, but I went by Discount Tire and they can beat them after all (shocker!). The difference is pretty close so I'm wondering if it would be better to get these tires from Discount Tire or Mercedes just based on the tire warranty from each of them. The Discount Tire warranty is about $100 per tire but I'm told covers more than what MB will cover unless I opt for the Wheel and Tire warranty.

The other tire that I'm being recommended is:
Continental Extreme Contact DWS06 Plus
265/40 R21 105W XL BSW

It's quite a bit cheaper for those, but I suspect they are also louder.

I don't care about run-flats as I think those are louder. I'm going for a silent ride. My EQS has PAF and 596 but we do pick up some tire noise and I'd like to reduce that. Right now I have these on the car:

They aren't very quiet.

 

Did you check the tire wear yourself or just take the dealers word for it? I found my dealer would measure 3.8 mm of tread and tell me 3 mm. They rounded everything down to make it appear the tires were more worn than they really were.

Remember, dealerships make as much or more money from service as opposed to sales.

 

I was watching closely while they did the tire gauge at the STEALERship. Three tires were at 4mm and one was fairly new so it had been replaced recently.

I had the Goodyear F1 Asymmetric 5's on my EQS. The were quiet, with adequate grip and lasted more than 33K miles.

 

I have some experience with these. My EQS has the OEM Pirelli's. Very quiet. My wife ran DWS on her EQS for about 35,000 miles...noticeably louder. When I put the OEM Goodyears back on, much quieter. I too want the quietest experience possible. I'm going to stick with Pirelli or Goodyear when my EQS needs new tires in a few thousand miles. Maybe some other brand with EV focused design would also be good, but I know from experience that I'm happy with these two brands so why experiment? Runner up would be the Contisilent on my EQB...no complaints, and I look forward to spring each year when I can get the Nokian snow tires off and quiet tires back on.

 

4 mm is fine, you have a bit of time before you need to replacement. The wear bars will indicate replacement at about 1.6 mm but in wet and snowy conditions 3 mm is a conservative limit. Replacing at 4 mm is just throwing money away; you have thousands of miles on those tires before they can be considered worn.

Experience may vary based on all sorts of things, but my wife was having problems with hydroplaning when her DWS were down to 3-4.

 

Different tires might help due to better tread design, but you might want to check how fast she was driving. You can hydroplane even new tires if you are going too fast. Been there, done that - not recommended.

 

I have DWS06 on my RWD SLK and hydroplaned the other day coming off a stop light into making a right hand turn... a little cold temp tho (~45F) and the tires have 18K miles on them rears... I swear by these DWS06 tires and love them on my convertible, now 7 years running with several replacements (long tread life, super comfy rides, and handling is optimal to great - for an A/S tire). As for the EQS SUV, we still have the factory Pirellis and they are OK... in fact, today on our 220-mile trip to NYC, my wife complained of the "noise", as if a window was open. The tires now have 12K miles on them but eyeball read will be about 4-5mm. Will pay more attention to the road noise on the return trip tomorrow, and may update this post then...

 

Yeah that’s our number one complaint so trying to go with super quiet EV tires. Preferable also rated for high speed. I had the car up to 120+ the other morning and had NO IDEA until I noticed it (in my HUD!). This car is crazy fast and smooth.

 

After returning from NYC I can confidently state that the stock Pirellis are indeed very quiet. The most noise observed driving the 220 miles back home were from wind not from tire/road. Yes, these Pirellis work perfect for the EQS SUV, providing quiet, comfortable and smooth ride in most road conditions…. Strongly recommended.

 

Just another tire comment...returned last night from a 800 or 850 or so mile road trip. After this thread, I paid particular attention to tire noise on my trip. The Pirelli's were so good. When I'd hit a stretch of road with newer blacktop, just silent. So nice. BTW, for all the hand wringing about charging on the road, I charged a total of 28 minutes on my entire trip (of course charged to full overnight at my hotel). The new EvGo stations are great. I added my car to their app, and it is now true plug and charge. Fast. Nice to have canopies over the chargers too. I actually charged more than I had to for safety sake...could have done 18 minutes for the trip.

 

This is rather interesting to me regarding the charging time and distance covered...Our 580 SUV was charged to 100% to start the 220-mile drive to NYC, but even at 100%, the readout mileage was 292-miles... you will expect that to cover the 220-mile trip... Nope. Only got to 190mile (11%) before needing a charge to complete the trip. I was mightily disappointed that a 292-mile range did not cover 220-mile trip... Is it the temp? or is there something wrong with this SUV if charged to 292 miles but did only got 190miles before needing to charge. Any thoughts here? The mileage was the most disappointing on the trip... everything else was superb as the EQS is such a fantastic driving machine soaking up the road imperfections with aplomb. Great riding SUV, for sure...but mileage??? WTF

 

I am sure it’s related to the cold, but also to the way you may have driven it. Our EQS is all over the map because I drive it like I have this great desire to go to prison and my wife drives like my great grandmother. We have the 580 sedan and right now the car is at 86% charged and shows 331 miles left. Based on previous trips I’m getting around 340 miles driving 85-95mph on the highway but I’m also in Texas. 🤠 The EQS is fantastic as either driving style is easily doable and luxurious while she is in Eco and I’m in Sport+.

 

Thank you for those shared thoughts. I averaged 75mph which isn't that bad... but a couple times the car asked that I drive under 70mph to preserve charge and mileage, but a lead foot gotta lead-foot

 

Range = function of Temperature (external and difference between external and cabin), speed (efficiency goes down with the square of the speed), tire width / pressure, elevation change, wind velocity and direction, rain, and headlight usage.

Assuming that it was cold out did you preheat the battery before you unplugged?

Based on your data your efficiency was 190miles /(0.89*108.4 kwH) about 2.0 mi/ kWh.

Here is a link to get a feel for how that compares. Really would be a function of the temperature to make any judgement but the SUV's are not super efficient.
