Real world efficiency numbers?
Real world efficiency numbers?
Have my G580 on order, expecting July delivery. Waiting for it seems like an eternity.
Curious in the meantime what types of efficiency numbers (wh/mi) people are getting?
I've seen range estimates from 200-300mi on a full charge. Is there really that much variability?

Your timing is perfect. I just spoke to a woman this morning in the Whole Foods parking lot in Charlotte NC about her G580. She said she's had it about two months and hasn't got 200 mile on 80%. NOT good...
If your usage will just be around town and you can charge at home, Its likely a non issue. But I wouldn't venture out on a road trip.
Why did you order one? Every dealer has tons of new G 580's in stock, and some have very low used mileage ones.

For the occasional road trip, as long as it is 220+ i'm ok with that. I have two small kids. it's good to take a break after a few hours of driving anyway.

Throttle House just had a nice video between this and a caddy. Reports are abysmal. The car they were driving had been turned back in by the owner with 1000 miles due to the inability to deal with the range. Cold weather reporting was significantly under 200.
I saw that. Those guys are great.
I've had a model x for 7 years. I never got over 200 on it. It worked fine for day to day driving. never was an issue.
Even did long road trips. Supercharging every couple hours wasn't terrible. Since the G will get access to superchargers, i'm hoping it will be a similar story.
At this point, if the G gets mid 200's that would be a decent upgrade for me.

This is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you @thebigkat82 !!!

The problem is not so much range, but the size of the battery and recharge time. On a Level 2, you are looking at over 15 hours to charge.
Usable real-world range is about 200 km - I can’t afford to wait ~15 hours to drive another 200 km, so I had to cancel my order — as much as I would love an electric G, it’s just not going to work.
I have a lake house 200 km away. If I can’t make a round trip without recharging, it’s a deal-breaker. Sometimes plans change and you don’t always have time to wait for the recharge.
This is the biggest drawback I have found with my EQS - it’s the recharge time — and that car has about 2X the range and an 85% smaller battery, meaning a faster recharge time.

I've driven EV's with similar or worse range for 10 years. For most folks the range on this truck won't be an issue.
1. I don't think real world range is 200km. 200 miles maybe, but based on what i've seen i still think you'll typically get significantly more than 200 miles on a charge.
2. Where are you that you won't have access to level 3 chargers? This car now has access to superchargers and they are pretty much everywhere.
3. FYSA, EQS has 108kwh battery. G580 has 116 kwh battery...

* Cold weather is a major (can be 50%) hit to range.
*Aerodynamics at highway speeds also hit range hard - especially when you have a not very aerodynamic car. Even on the EQS it’s very significant, on the G the hit will be huge. Try driving at 85mph and at 60mph. The range hit at 85 will be unreal.
*Battery size is 15% larger in the G which means 15% longer charge time - that’s about 2 hours more at Level 2.
Unless I get a level 3 at home, charge time is irrelevant. I never use public chargers. I want to get from A to B as fast as possible, not wait to recharge. And a good # of public chargers are broken or occupied, so you can’t really rely on them.
Just my 2 cents after driving 20,000 km in my EQS over 12 months. And being a 2019 G550 owner (that’s the redesign with the 4L V8 AMG engine with less power)
