How old is the current G-class design? I know I saw it in brochures from '79 and it looked pretty much the same back then. I think it would both be a great ideas if MB either chooses to do like Land Rover with it's Defender and stick to the old boxy design, to make the G-class achieve cult-status, or redesign it completely. Risks with a complete redesign is that it will not differ enough from the ML. The painting above looks pretty good though.

The G-class has been released 25 years ago.
It has been developed for the German army. Most important was a plain chassis for less damages on oilpan, Tranny and differential, 3 lockup differentials, and the ability to get over rough and deep terrain. This characteristics have never been changed over the years, together with the plant Stayr-Daimler-Puch in Austria. They only fitted in the actual MB technology and refined the design. This car is the best car MB ever offered, espacialy with the new CDI 400 dieselengine.
So interesting the new G in 2004 or 2005 will look like, it will never reach the reliability of the old "tank".
I heard the new G will be based on M-class chassis.
Good by my G

I think the current design could use some sprucing up, but lets not go too far!!! From this drawing they might be taking some styling cues from the M-class & I'm not sure that is the right direction for this ultimate SUV!!! IMHO, I really like the current bodystyle, it is not a car for the masses, it is very unique.

i think the current bodystyle is a classic design that is timeless. The drawing of the new one looks hideous in my opinion. Its gonna start looking like every other suv. The G wagen isnt an SUV its a tank. It should stay looking like a tank. Maybe they can release this new one as a smaller version to replace the ML kinda like the H2 while keeping the old awesome tank looking H1 alive.

I think you guys would be extremely Unfair if you call the current G ugly!
Imagine folks which auto maker has a car so old? that still sells so well?
I mean Imagine they even release an AMG version of the car after so long and they were all sold off!
We even have the G-Guard in Eu. They sell a lot too!
I think the current design should stay!
