G500 - Last Model Year for US Market?

I have owned a 2003 G500, loved it, but then sold it and got a 2005 G500 when it was a rumor that the G500 would no longer be imported into the US. The GL was to replace the G-Class for the US market - I dont think so....

Then 2006, 2007, and now 2008....does anyone know the latest facts on the lifespan of the G500 for the US market?

I have also heard (but doubt it) that it will be redesigned in 2010.

Thoughts? Info?

You'll go crazy trying to figure out the last year or when there will be any changes.

It is supposed to continue until 2010 at which point it probably won't be able to meet certain standards anymore or so they say. I think we'll see a G550 with the new V8 before it is over. The 6.2L AMG V8 doesn't make much sense here so I doubt they'll make a G63.

Not true, there is no G550 anywhere.
in Europe the only 5.5L G-Class is the G55 AMG. The G500 (5.0L) is still the base petrol car.

G320 CDI in US? When? Why not?

What we really need in the US is the G320 CDI. It gets over 25 mpg I am told. What we need is torque and good gas mileage, not horsepower.

I have written to MBUSA and told them I will trade my G500 for the 320 as soon as it is available. So far, no reply. I am told it is available in Canada, however.

I suggest other owners write to MBUSA and request this option. If Chrysler is putting this engine in many of their Jeeps, why can't we have it?

Thanks,
Grane

There is no G320 CDI available in Canada. In Europe there is. All we have here for the G is the G500, and the G55 AMG. There is however a GL320 CDI available in Canada, but same goes for the US. What they should have had here is the G400 CDI, like they did in Europe not so long ago...

I drove a GL 320 CDI and it's ok for a big family or something but it's too wide for off roading. A friend has a Ford Expedition and the paint on the sides have almost been worn off going up old skidder and logging roads.

Thanks for the update about Canada. I spend some great times there in the fall, and also at the Montreal Grand Prix. I saw Senna pass Mansell coming out of the hairpin near the bridge that I still feel violated the laws of physics and mechanics.

M-B USA is not going to introduce a V6 G320 (which is more expensive than the V8 G500) and cannot be sold in 12 states including Cal. and NY. BlueTec isn't even on the drawing board for the 463.
There is no saving now in the U.S. with Diesel being HIGHER than premium. A V8 420 would retail as much as the G55...not gonna happen.

They first said 2007 would be the last production year of the G Class, then changed it to 2009 due to huge customer responses.Hope they will extend it again.

G400 CDI
G class line is extended till 2015. Starting with 2010 models G's have changed. G320 cdi is now G350 cdi, g500 is g550. G400 cdi was a 2000 model discontinued in 2005 and replaced by above mentioned G320 cdi.
