The G-class is essentially based on the same design that was introduced in 1979. There have been minor updates, with the biggest coming in 1990 when the current W463 series was launched and then received significant upgrades in 2001. It was officially launced in the US only in 2002, but the "look" has been generally the same since the beginning.

There have been some minor updates since 2002 including new front grill, new xenon headlamps, new rear lamps, wheels, but that's about it. Many changes on the interior, engines, gearbox, etc.

Part of the charm of this vehicle is that they didn't mess with a winning design. Also, the GL was originally designed to potentially replace the G-Class but Mercedes quickly realized that die-hard G-wagen fans would not accept the GL as a true successor and have extended production of the G-wagen and continued to introduce improvements.

good to know, these minor stuff like lamps, grill's....can they be changed or is it a pain in the rear end? i never really looked at the G until recently and fell in love....i saw a white on today on 23's and it looked so clean....

The body panels are identical to the 1979 model; and the stamping dies for those panels are original to 1979.

There is a 30the Anniversary Gala celebration scheduled for Graz, Austria (where they are made) for June 19-21, 2009.

Looking to buy a used G500 soon, just wondering when did they start putting in projectors in the headlights? Also I noticed they changed the gauges a couple times since they're debut in 2002, wondering when the gauges were changed? Thanks!

The 2002 "debut" was in the USA and Canada. The truck has been available to the rest of the world in its same exact exterior form since 1979.

Yeah I was aware of that, I guess I should have been more specific as to where I live in the world.

It seems like if I look for 07 Gs they're still using reflector lights so it seems like 08 is when they cam eout with projectors. Thanks for the help!
