Got a new G

MB Manhattan still is not budging much on prices. They would rather keep their "pride" rather than work with someone. I offered a decent price on a used G55 last Spring and they declined, only to call me 5 months later because they still had it and finally sold it wholesale after months of carrying costs. Meh.

2013 G 63 AMG
Other SUVs such as the Range Rover or Cayenne are also quite capable off-road, but they are more fragile and cannot handle repeated off-road use. The G-Class can be abused off-road regularly and still get you to work in comfort and style every day.
It's also exclusive, because it is the last hand-built Mercedes. Only about 4,000 civilian versions are built each year, and it is the SUV of choice of heads of state, celebrities, dictators, and billionaires the world over for these basic reasons: exclusivity, capability, performance (G55).
For people who do not value these qualities, which is most sensible people, Mercedes builds the ML, GL, and GLK. I'm not sensible.

Very very very well put!!!
Why mess with a good thing? The G-Class, unlike most unibody SUVs on the market today, is still true to it's military roots while being quite comfortable and even luxurious on-road. That's the key to its global success for the past thirty years, and that's why the shape is basically the same as it was when introduced in 1979.

The G is the only automobile I have ever owned 2 of consecutively. I get bored easily but as long as there is a G on the planet, I will likely own one!

G class
Jimmy, Guess it is the only TRUE SUV around. Do you mean the production of the vehicle hand built as "not through assembly line"
I have to take one for a test on the weekend. Don't even know if they have one in stock in Toronto.
The 09 is the G550 model change. Its probably better to either go with a 09 or a 05/06 used since the 08 models are identical to the 05/06 ones. (if they drive the same)
Have you experience much problems with major components of the car? I don't want it to be like the S550 4M with a bunch of problems and they had to rebuild the whole engine. Minor problems here and there are expected.

I was waiting for someone to respond. Having owned a Range Rover, I can say that while not exhibiting its car-like qualities, the G is like being enclosed in a bank vault.

05 v 08....
There are a few changes not not really "must have's" (see above). The 7 speed is smoothe.
I did not get my first SUV until I was 36 and we moved to the hills of Kentucky and needed it.
At that time I couldn't fathom spending $$$ on something that was not "cool" or fast. It is now an integral part of our mechanical family.
Would not imagine how it would be not to have one. We packed 9 people in it recently and headed to Greensboro for the night out.

Seating arrangement.....
2 in the front buckets (DD and a former Chicago Bear), 4 in the second row bench and 3 in the back. Not comfortable but we all got there and home safely.
